Trinity Diversity Connection is sponsoring a stand-up comedian from Comedy Central at 7 p.m. tonight in Laurie Auditorium to kick off the weekend.

Eliot Chang has been traveling across the United States since last summer on a college tour to bring his comedy to students across the country.

According to Trinity Diversity Connection’s Facebook event page, Chang was voted second in Comedy Central’s “Stand-up Showdown.” His other television appearances include E!’s “Chelsea Lately,” Showtime’s “Minority Report,” Spike TV’s “Crash Test” and NBC’s “Law & Order SVU.”

“Eliot Chang is the first Asian comedian that has performed at Trinity,” said junior Tam Ngo, TDC president.

Chang first contacted TDC in order to advertise his comedy about Asian culture and Asian people in general by challenging Asian stereotypes.

“TDC paid a large amount of money to bring him to campus. (The asking price was $5000-$6000.) After his comedy show, he is going to have a question and answer session that people can text to his number, and he will answer the questions right on stage,” Ngo said. “This event is open to the public, and I go with my committee off campus to distribute flyers to Asian restaurants, Asian markets and Starbucks in order to spread the word and bring everyone together to Trinity.”

TDC is expanding the range of activities they host. In doing so, the organization hopes to attract more people to its events.

“Usually SPB invites comedians, and now we are trying to spread the scope of what TDC is capable of. This will be the first comedian that TDC will bring to Trinity University. TDC will have this event, Taste of Diversity and Fear Factor,” Ngo said.

Some students are already expressing their excitement for this event.

“I am really excited about Eliot Chang coming. I watched a couple YouTube videos of his, and he is like the Asian Kevin Hart,” said junior Chris Williams. “I really like what I have seen from him so far.”

First year Alex Urby is among the students planning to see Chang perform.

“I am planning to go see the comedian…It is bound to be an amazing night,” Urby said.

Some of Chang’s jokes include “Girls Who Love Asians,” “Things Asians Hate” and “One Night Stands.” All of these can be viewed on Chang’s official YouTube channel.
