Men’s golf brought home a victory at the Al Jones Memorial Tournament, held at University of Texas-Tyler’s Cascades Country Club. The Tigers shot a final round of 294 on Tuesday to leave with the win. The Tigers were tied for first after the first day of the tournament with the UT-Tyler “B” team at 292.
Trinity completed the two-day tournament with a 586 point total and beat the host University of Texas-Tyler Patriots, who are also the defending NCAA Division III champions, by a narrow margin of one stroke. Senior Tyler Lehmann attributes this victory to the changes that the team has experienced so far this season.
“We were lucky to gain a few new guys this year that have already made a large impact. Our new coach, Sean Etheredge, has been working with us very closely since our first tournament and it paid off with a big win against last year’s national champions (UT-Tyler) at their home event. We were excited to return to this tournament this year, and overall we played some of the best, most consistent golf we have ever played as a team,” Lehmann said.
Lehmann tied for third place overall in the tournament with junior Kalen Vos, with scores of 144 in the individual competition of the par-71 event. Senior Erik Long-Goheen shot a par-71 for a 145 total, finishing fifth in a four-way tie. First year Trevor Warner recorded a 72 for a 148 total score, and placed in the No. 15 slot. Sophomore Alex Hartzell tied for 16th place after shooting 74 (149 total).Junior David Cunningham shot a 77 (150 total) and tied for the No. 20 position. Senior Austin Jung also had a 77 (153 total) and was in a tie for 26th place.
Feeling strongly about the team’s perfomance this weekend, Lehmann said, “We have our final tournament of the semester in a few weeks at River Crossing and have no doubt that we can all play very well there.”
The men’s and women’s golf teams next compete together at the Alamo City Classic on Oct. 21 and 22 in Spring Branch, TX. Before that, however, the women will travel to San Destin, Fla. for the Golf Week Division III Fall Preview from Oct. 13-15.
