Ah, the first week back from spring break. What a terrible, confusing and upsetting time. Depending on how you handled yourself over the break, you are some combination of the following: dead tired, hungover, missing your larger and more comfortable home bed, trapped in the library because you ignored homework for a week, weeping because you only have Mabee swipes left, or panicking because you graduate in two months and all you have to show for it is a sketchy resume and a vague idea of what to include in a cover letter. It’s a tricky time for all of us. In this time of strife, however, here are some things to both settle your feathers and perk you back up.
Spring is a wonderful fairy land in so many ways. First, the flowers are back, not that they are ever gone for too long in San Antonio, but still, who doesn’t love a good cluster of daffodils? Second, the spring semester has long been home to a whole host of terrific lecturers. Already this semester we’ve hosted Azar Nafisi, the brilliant and inspiring author of “Reading Lolita in Tehran” and Lynda Barry, the irreverent and refreshing author of “One! Hundred! Demons!,” to name a couple. Both of these women, in addition to the other lecturers we’ve seen this spring, were wonderful speakers. Trinity has devoted itself to bringing engaging and engaged thinkers, speakers, writers and leaders to campus, and we would all be foolish to miss out on them. Be sure to check out Walter Isaacson this coming Wednesday in Laurie at 7:30 p.m.
If you are really that averse to tuning into a lecture, then venture off campus and check out the festivals happening in and around San Antonio. A&E breaks down the Maverick Music Festival happening in San Antonio this weekend. If music’s not your scene, wait a of couple weeks and descend upon the Poteet Strawberry Festival in Poteet, Texas or party the days and nights away at Fiesta.
Cure those post-spring break blues by exploring the world around you. You never know who you’ll meet, where it’ll take you, or what you’ll discover.
