Welcome Week is a beloved tradition, offering new students a chance to explore Trinity’s history, learn its rules, meet its students and pet the campus cats for the first time. Here’s a guide to some of the major Welcome Week events, Since a single article can scarcely do justice to these seven days, I encourage you to do some exploring on your own, too.
Running With The Dean
(7:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 25, meet at Witt Center)
If you’re prepping for a running event or just want to explore some of the running routes in the Trinity area, this event is for you. If you’re easily exhausted like me, don’t worry. Dean Tuttle kindly allows the students to decide the running pace.
Coates Caper (8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25, Coates University Center)
Delicious food. Delightful caricature drawings and photo ops. Dancing. And so, so much more.
Don’t miss this school-wide celebration, which serves as a chance for you to familiarize yourself with one of the campus’ most important buildings. Also, take it from me; give the karaoke machine a try. You will not regret it. Unless you try to get all “Fancy” or something.
Picnic & Tower Climb (6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 26, Murchison Tower)
Perhaps one of the most well-known and well-loved Trinity traditions, this event allows first years to ascend Murchison Tower and gaze out at the campus they will call home for the next four years. The only other Trinity students allowed to enter the tower are graduating seniors, who come full circle as they make the climb for a second and final time.
If you are as sentimental as I am, you will remember this enter for a very long time. If not, climbing those stairs is still a fantastic workout routine.
Football Scrimmage (4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, Football Field)
Until last year, I attended very few Trinity sporting events. This is shameful on my part; the non-athletic among us should remember to cheer on our athletic friends. This event, in which seasoned Trinity football players compete against our new athletes, allows you the chance to cheer on both the old and new players.
Welcome Week Comedian (9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, Laurie Auditorium)
Enjoy the annual Welcome Week comedy event. It’s excellent for stress relief and for perfecting your belly laugh. This year, we are featuring the comedic duo Frangela, who have appeared on VH1 and NPR. Whether you are looking for good laughs or good company, you are bound to leave satisfied.
Welcome Week Concert (8:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29 Baseball Field)
You finished your first week of classes””well, your first half-week, anyhow. Celebrate with an adrenaline-filled hip hop concert on the baseball field. You know, the usual.
Have a great first week, Tigers. Make sure to dive headfirst into the dizzying array of delights that Trinity has to offer. Take it from a senior; these events are ones you should not miss, and will not forget. On behalf of my lovely A&E section, I wish you a marvelous and memorable first week. May the odds be ever in your favor, and may your feet be adequately prepared for the tower climb.
