The Trinity men’s soccer team won their 11th consecutive game when they took on Schreiner University 7-0 last Friday in Kerrville, Texas. The Tigers recorded their sixth consecutive shutout in seven games, improving their overall record to 14-1-0 and their SCAC record to 10-0-0. The Mountaineers dropped to 5-7 overall and 3-7 in the SCAC.
The game remained scoreless until sophomore Zacharias Edholm kicked the eventual game-winning goal on an assist from senior Johnny Lawson with a minute and a half left in the first period. This goal late in the first half gave the Tigers momentum going into halftime.
In the 78th minute of the second half, sophomore Callum Squires connected with Edholm for the score. Nine seconds later, in the 78th minute, Edholm scored another goal on a pass from senior midfielder Victor Araujo.
“Coach put me in and told me to do my best to make a difference. I was really happy to help the team secure an important victory and play my role as best as I could,” Squires said.
The game resulted in a hat trick for Edholm. Senior Matt Cardone had goalkeeper duties, and the Tiger defense only permitted one total shot.
Last Sunday, Oct. 19, the team took on Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. The game resulted in a 2-1 win for the Tigers. With this win, the Tigers clinched the top seed in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. Roberto Comargo kicked off, scoring with a solo goal in the 14th minute of play. Texas Lutheran scored in the 40th minute of play.
The game-winning goal came from All-American Victor Araujo in the 51st minute off a pass from Brent Mandelkorn. All-American senior Matt Cardone guarded the goal allowing one goal and posted one save in the game.
After these games, first year defender Dylan Blumberg was named SCAC Men’s Defensive Player of the Week. Also after these wins the Tigers are ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA coaches poll.
The Tigers play, tonight, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. versus Austin on the McGinlay Field. They play again on Sunday, Oct. 26 at home versus Dallas at 12 p.m.
