The Tigers suffered two losses this weekend against Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University.

Friday, February 6, they lost to fourth-place Southwestern 60-54, trailing behind by just a few points throughout the game.

Southwestern started off the game with a three-point lead until Kham Roach tied up the score 3-3. The Pirates held the lead again until William Young tied the score then held a one point lead after making a free-throw. From then on, the Tigers struggled to regain momentum, allowing the Pirates to take the lead in the first half 19-26.

The Tigers were down 11 points within the last few minutes of the game, until Matt Selling went on an eight-point run (50-53).  The Tigers struggled to tie up the games with two fouls within the last few seconds that gave Southwestern three more points to end the game 54-60.

Saturday, Feb. 7, the Tigers played against Texas Lutheran in an effort to win against one more SCAC team.

The Tigers’ lead the first half of the game 11-4 at the 13:53 mark when Craig Saltarelli made a three-point jump shot. The Tigers lost the lead in the first half and lost 30-48. Selling led the game with 22 points, tying a personal season high, while A.J. Pulliam contributed 12 points in the game.

“Overall, I think we underachieved this weekend but that doesn’t take away from the effort we put forth in trying to win those games,” Roach said. “A problem we’ve had this season is getting everyone on the same page and focused to execute in clutch moments like we saw this weekend. There were good individual efforts but individuals don’t win games; teams do.”

The two losses mean that the team will be unable to continue to the SCAC conference championship. However, their season is not over and the team hopes to end the season with a few more wins.

“Going into the weekend we knew we still had a chance to qualify for the SCAC Tournament, where anything can happen.  [We] needed to win at least one of these games on the road,” said head coach Pat Cunningham.

The Tigers still have three more games to finish off the  regular season.

“Looking towards our next game, I feel that we should continue to focus on bringing our team together and collectively playing more together overall,” Pulliam said. “I think we can finish our last three home games on a good note”

The Tigers’ record is 2-20 overall and 1-10 in SCAC.

The Tigers start their final three games at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, against Austin College. Saturday, Feb. 14 against the University of Dallas, both games will be at home.

Their final game will be Saturday, February 21 against Schreiner University.
