As the spring semester nears the halfway point, ideas for summer plans may be crossing students’s minds. Some choose summer jobs and others study abroad, but one advantage Trinity students have is the opportunity to participate in summer internships and the assistance that Career Services offers.

Ideally, students who are interested in summer internships have already applied for and secured them during the fall semester; however, there may be a few applications with deadlines in the spring. No matter where students are in the process, or whether they have even thought about applying, Career Services offers guidance and assistance.

“Lots of students don’t realize that the time to apply is during the fall semester. They’re surprised when they look and see that deadlines have passed,” Twyla Hough, director of career services said. “But there are still plenty of opportunities available.”

Career Services staff can help with resume building and updating, as well as making connections with potential employers or helpful alumni. The first step in the hunt for summer internships is setting up a meeting with someone from Career Services.

“The first step is to have a conversation with an advisor,” Hough said. “Then we can start making contacts within the industry.”

Summer internships are important in that they enhance a student’s learning experience in the classroom and give students an advantage when searching for careers after graduation.

“Internships on a resume give students a competitive edge. They tell employers you know how to apply and work in the real world,” Hough said. “They also help students get some experience and realize if the career you’re pursuing is really what you want to do.”
