Trinity’s track and field team performed well in two meets, one on Saturday, Feb. 28, and another on March 14.

The meet Feb. 28 saw the team take wins in five events in a meet held at Trinity. On the men’s side, junior Eric Booker won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.95 seconds, one of the fastest times in Trinity history. Kirk Gulliver also took home a win in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:03.79.

“I thought my race went really well, I felt like I was running pretty slow, but I still won. I wasn’t really able to get fully warmed up before my race, but I just went out there and ran,” Gulliver said.

Weather played a role with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees for most of the meet.

“I really like coming out and supporting my friends at the meets, but I don’t understand how they’re out here and able to perform right now,” said sophomore attendee, Paige Brown.

Cody Hall won the 400-meter hurdle in 56.06 seconds, while Louie Montoto recorded a jump of 1.85 meters to win the men’s high jump. On the women’s side, Brittany Sullivan won the triple jump with a distance of 11.40 meters. Heather Hayes took first in the high jump with her mark of 1.50 meters. Taylor Gloor won the pole vault with a distance of 2.75 meters, and Mikolka Nweke won the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.75 meters.

The team traveled to Texas A&M University Corpus Christi during the last Saturday of spring break to compete in a meet that included Division I, II and III athletes.

Cody Hall placed second in the 110-meter hurdles to lead the Tigers; his time of 15.01 is the best in Division III. Matt Love came close to breaking a Trinity record with his discus throw of 44.61 meters””becoming fourth on the all-time list for Trinity. Katie Groke ran the 400 hurdles in just 1:07.8, which landed her a third-place finish in that event.

“I feel like this team is shaping up really nicely; we’ve been working really hard since the middle of September to prepare for the season,” said junior Vince Omegba.

Senior Sarah Pickett leaped 1.57 meters in the high jump, which was the fifth highest in the event. Other notable performances came from Mariana Sigala who finished second in the women’s 800-meter, and Louie Montoto who was second in men’s high jump.

“Obviously these meets are important, but we have our eyes on the real goal which is winning conference,” Omegba said.

The team competes again on March 21 at the University of the Incarnate Word Quadrangular. The team then hosts the Trinity University Invitational on March 27.
