The annual athlete’s banquet was held Thursday, April 9, in Laurie Auditorium. All fall and spring athletes were invited to attend, and were asked to vote on who in the athletics community should win: hottest coach, women’s senior of the year, best all-around athlete, men’s senior of the year, the Tiger award, best intersport relationship, best play, best comeback, best-looking team, best parties, most likely to end up on a box of Wheaties, women’s freshman of the year, men’s freshman of the year, worst sportsmanship, best hair and best doppelganger.
Cameron Hill, the women’s basketball coach, took home the hottest coach award. Emily Jorgens was awarded the women’s senior of the year; she is the women’s soccer standout who led the nation with 27 assists this year and scored 19 goals in her 2014 campaign. Jorgens also boasts a 4.0 GPA and recently received a Division III postgraduate award.
“It was pretty cool to see the majority of athletes on campus all in one room and free food is good food. Obviously Emily Jorgens was no surprise; the numbers she put up this season were pretty impressive,” said sophomore Stephen Thai.
The prestigious Tiger award went to senior Kirby Peddicord. Best intersport relationship went to seniors Kelly Holton and Nick Caine.
“It was great to come out to this event, it was an honor to be nominated for an award. It’s great to bring all the athletes together in one place, and share some laughs. I think I should have won, but we’re a shoe-in for next year; knock on wood,” said junior nominee Kirk Gulliver.
The best looking team award went to the women’s soccer team. Sophomore Todd Edwards won two awards, taking home the best hair award and the doppelganger award for his comparison to Jesus.
“Its fun to get together with all the teams and reminisce on everyone’s season. While we’re all used to competing against other schools for awards, it’s fun to compete against each other and everyone’s a good sport about it. Maybe next year the men’s track team can take best looking team. To be fair, we spend a lot of time with our shirts off,” said junior Vince Omegba.
Women’s freshman of the year went to track standout Britney Sullivan; basketball player Matt Jones won men’s freshman of the year.
Junior Tom Jones was awarded the best athlete of the year award; he participates in both swimming and football.
