When I first arrived at Trinity University, one of the first things to cross my mind was that I’d have to become a bigger basketball fan because I believed that was the only sports team that San Antonio had to offer. I arrived at the AT&T Center excited for my first Spurs game and fully ready to take in all the action.

I glanced around the arena to become familiar with my surroundings when something on the jumbotron caught my eye. On it, the Spurs were advertising for a Rampage game. I quickly pulled out my phone and found that San Antonio was not the one-sport town I had believed it to be. With a minor league hockey team, a minor league baseball team, a professional soccer team, a WNBA franchise and an NBA franchise, San Antonio has multiple sports options to choose from.
San Antonio Missions

The minor league baseball team is just a short twenty-minute drive away from the Trinity campus.

The stadium has an amazing atmosphere, with the San Antonio Missions website referring to it as the “Jewel of the Texas League.”
As the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, the Missions help the Padres’ draft picks grow and develop into potential major leaguers.

Although the team has an overall 24-27 record thus far, the missions have really come into their won winning eight of 10 recent games.

Outfielders Hunter Renfro and Yeison Asencio will both have to play key roles to help the Missions turn their season around.
With Thursdays being dollar night, Missions games are can’t-miss events for students wanting to enjoy the dollar beer, hot dogs and sodas.

San Antonio Scorpions

Located northwest of Trinity, the San Antonio Scorpions play at Toyota Field. As a member of the North American Soccer League, the Scorpions won the championship last season.

This season, the Scorpions haven’t had as successful of a season as they wanted, currently in tenth place in the eleven-team league with a record of one win, two draws and four losses for the fall season.

While they have not had the on field success that faithful supporters would have hoped for, there are two recent Trinity graduates of the 2015 class playing with the Scorpions ““ goalie Matt Cardone and midfielder Johnny Lawson ““ who hopefully have bright futures in the league.

This Saturday, the Scorpions have a dollar popcorn, hot dog and soda night. With tickets starting at only $10, this is a fun opportunity to see some competitive soccer matches while watching Trinity alums live their dream of playing professional soccer.

San Antonio Rampage

The Rampage is the minor league hockey team affiliate with the Florida Panthers. The hockey team shares the AT&T Center with both pro basketball teams, the Spurs and the Silver Stars.

Located just fifteen minutes from campus, this easily reachable destination hosts all sorts of sporting events, and even rodeos and concerts.

With a 45-23 record last season, the Rampage qualified for the playoffs where they were eliminated in the first round.
With key players coming back, and young talents such as goalie Michael Houser and winger Quinton Howden, this team could compete and ultimately make a run for the championship.

For those of legal age, all of these stadiums offer dollar beer, hotdog, and soda nights that are an absolute must for those wanting to explore these sporting venues.

San Antonio Stars

The San Antonio Stars are the WNBA team that calls San Antonio home.

Guard Danielle Robinson and Forward Sophia Young- Malcolm are the two players that steer this Stars team to success.
Despite their 7-18 record this season, the Stars still have a positive game day environment that makes these games a can’t miss event.

The breast cancer awareness nights and military appreciation nights hosted by the Stars are just a few fun events to attend.
This Friday is also dollar beer and soda night, so if you are looking to relax and unwind, what better way than catching a basketball game with some friends?

The Stars will be playing against the Minnesota Lynx (18-8) at the Freeman Coliseium at 8 p.m.

San Antonio Spurs

Of all the teams in San Antonio, it is the Spurs that have captured the heart of the city.

By bringing in LaMarcus Aldridge and David West, the Spurs have become a favorite to win the NBA championship this upcoming season.

In addition, Tim Duncan has taken a huge paycut to stay with the team showing just how committed this team is to winning another championship.

With a 55-27 record last season, this team is expected to best that mark this time around, causing the Spurs games to be can’t miss basketball this season.

If the team is as good as they look on paper, and they look like the best team on paper, all Trinity students should do whatever they can to go to a Spurs game this season.
