As the new season approaches for the women’s soccer team, they welcome a new member to the group: assistant coach Chelsea Frye, who will be aiding head coach Lance Key in his 12th season for the Tigers.

With a bachelor’s degree from Wartburg College in psychology and fitness management with an emphasis on teaching and coaching, Frye will be a great addition to the powerhouse team.

For this coming season, with the nationals tournament on their to-do list for the year, Frye will be quite the helping hand with her background in coaching collegiate teams from her hometown at Wartburg.

She also was the head coach of Waverly-Shell Rock High School in Iowa since 2013.

“I started coaching as soon as I graduated in 2012 with collegiate teams, so this would be the second team I’ve coach for,” Frye said. “I also coached a high school team back in Iowa as well. I’ve been coaching for 4 years on the collegiate level.”
Coming all the way from a small town in Iowa, Frye explained that she knew a little about what Trinity was about.

Transitioning from her old stomping grounds did not seem like too much of a hassle for this coach, as she explains that the school she previously assisted had very similar views to Trinity.

“I’ve known of Trinity when it came to soccer, but never thought that I would come to Texas,” Frye said. “My old boss gave me words of encouragement to apply, and it worked out! … I love it here so far. It feels like a home away from home, and the institution that I was at before this has very similar cultures and philosophies, so coming here was a nice transition from where I was before.”

Frye is well equipped when it comes to knowing the ins and outs of the soccer field, playing forward for most of her career she was an Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honoree from 2008 to 2011, playing in 84 games and scoring 44 goals.

“I’ve been playing basically since I could walk. I played club, high school and college, and now I’m coaching,” Frye said.

After the first scrimmage for the Tigers last week, which had a big turnout, Frye and head coach Lance Key seemed very optimistic about what the season had in store. She pointed out that there were good and bad things that the coaches noticed, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed in practice.

Overall, from what was seen thus far by both coaches, there are some high hopes for the girl’s soccer team’s upcoming season.
