Mabee Dining Hall was filled with more than just hungry students on the night of Wednesday, October 28th; men in makeup and women in wife-beaters took the stage at the 8th annual Trinity University Drag Show. These student volunteers dressed in drag to perform a song or dance to raise money through donations from the audience. The drag show was hosted by the Sexual Diversity Alliance and Zeta Chi sorority, and all the funds raised were donated to the San Antonio Aids Foundation.
“This is the 8th year that these two groups have put on the drag show,” said Brittney Bowman, a junior accounting and entrepreneurship student. “As the vice president of Zeta Chi, I helped to organize and put on the entire event with the help of SDA, SAAF and other members of my club, notably Brianna Wood.”
As vice president, Bowman initiated several efforts to ensure that the drag show would generate success, including making posters, managing the Facebook page of the event, organizing prizes and the newest feature “” creating the t-shirt campaign for the event. Bowman considers these endeavors worthwhile and thinks that they contributed to a successful fundraiser.
“It was a very successful night. Although the sound system proved to be tricky, once we got it to work, everything went perfectly. All of the performers were amazing, the turnout was great and we raised a lot of money. We raised just shy of $450 for the San Antonio Aids Foundation,” Bowman said.
For some attendees and performers, this was the first Drag Show they were able to take part in.
“This was my first time being involved with the drag show,” said sophomore, Andrea Acevedo. “I actually was not able to attend last year, but seeing it all put together this year has inspired me to want to help make this a bigger deal in the future.”
As the public relations officer for the Sexual Diversity Alliance, Acevedo made sure that students were aware of the abilities and offerings of SAAF by sharing information about it via social media and promoting it at tables on campus.
“I think this event was really great because the San Antonio Aids Foundation is an awesome organization. They offer STD testing and they work to help individuals with HIV/AIDS,” Acevedo said.
Although the organizers of the event put a great amount of time, energy and hard work into it, they gave themselves time to enjoy the event and have fun.
“For me, the most memorable portion of the night was standing back behind everything taking pictures and seeing how filled all of the seats were,” Bowman said. “After seeing how many people came out and how much money we raised, I couldn’t be more proud of all of the support that we had for the event.”
