With finals looming in the not-so-distant future, it’s important to remind ourselves of the exciting things waiting for us on the other side. This year has been pretty dry in terms of blockbuster films so far, but this summer is shaping up to make up for that tenfold. Despite the inundation of reboots and sequels, there’s an impressive line-up scheduled and the most recent trailers are only making the hype stronger.
Captain America: Civil War (May 6)
The Avengers are at war again, only this time with each other. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Iron Man, who is at odds with Captain America over the government’s increasing involvement in the Avengers’ activities. After their’ failure to prevent the destruction of multiple cities across the globe, Iron Man believes the group needs structure and authority, while Cap wants the team to continue making their own calls. Based on the trailer, this will be yet another superhero flick laced with just enough doom and gloom to be taken seriously. Let’s be real, though. Cap versus Iron Man is not something you want to miss.
X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27)
The X-Men franchise can’t seem to stay away from the past. Last time we saw them, they were bringing Wolverine back from 1973. This time around, the first mutant in history, Apocalypse (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” actor Oscar Isaac) awakens thousands of years after his initial reign, determined to destroy non-mutant mankind. Magneto, disillusioned as ever, joins Apocalypse, forcing Professor X and his followers to fight. With the addition of some of the classic comic book characters, insane special effects, and flashbacks to the rest of the ancient mutants, this is probably going to be epic.
Finding Dory (June 17)
Is there anyone not excited about this sequel? Dory and Nemo are back, and this time it’s Dory’s family we’re finding. The movie is set just a year after the last one, but it’s been thirteen years since “Finding Nemo” was in theaters. With another sweet, family-oriented storyline, here’s to hoping “Finding Dory” lives up to it’s predecessor.
Independence Day: Resurgence (June 24)
Twenty years after the original film, “Resurgence” once again finds our country threatened by aliens. Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith, has been working on the nation’s alien defense technology since the last invasion. But will it prove successful? Will his new right-hand man, Liam Hemsworth, even come close to capturing the wit of Smith’s previous character? Nothing in the trailer really sways me one way or another. Here’s to hoping “Resurgence” isn’t just a mediocre follow-up to it’s prequel.
Ghostbusters (July 15)
Yet another blast from the past “” this time coming back from thirty years ago, and with a twist! The Ghostbusters team is now made up of four of the funniest ladies in comedy. And there’s a Hemsworth brother in this flick too! This one keeps his accent, thank God. The reboot looks to be a story of two washed up ghost hunters teaming up with a couple of quirky characters to save the planet from a takeover of ghosts. Talk of cameos from the original team of four is all over the internet “” will we get to see Ghostbuster Bill Murray one more time?
Jason Bourne (July 29)
Bourne is back, and supposedly better than ever. While there’s literally zero plot information released yet, there’s a generic, action-packed, a thirty second trailer that aired all the way back on Super Bowl Sunday. Watch this a few times and you’ll have all the cliche quotes memorized. With three months left until release, we’re sure to be overwhelmed anytime now with ads featuring Matt Damon doing his best to pretend he isn’t getting old.
Suicide Squad (August 5)
Finally, something fresh and new. When the government needs the most ruthless, grittiest mercenaries in the country, who do they call upon but the DC Comics villains? Characters like the Joker, Harley Quinn, Batman, Deadshot, Enchantress and more team up in this bad-gone-good action movie. Despite the disaster of DC’s Superman vs. Batman, you might want to keep an open mind. This looks pretty damn cool.
