ASSAULT

On Nov. 2, early Saturday morning, a student was assaulted as she was walking back to campus from St. Mary’s Strip. The student was grabbed from behind, but the attacker fled when the student screamed. The case is currently under investigation, and the attacker has not been found. TUPD is working with SAPD to investigate the assault by going through camera footage, checking for potential witnesses.

Pete Perez, assistant police chief, encourages students to use Elerts and the emergency phones placed around campus. Particularly off-campus, individuals should walk in pairs.

“At this particular place, because it happened right outside our campus, walk in pairs, walk in groups, be aware of your surroundings, so that something like this hopefully won’t happen,” Perez said.

Perez also emphasized that they offer the Rape and Aggression Defense (RAD) program, so students can protect themselves.

“To teach you about your surroundings and to teach you basic self-defense movements — strikes and kicks and what have you, so that you can protect yourself should something like this take place,” Perez said.

MISSING STUDENT

On Nov. 3, late Sunday night, friends reported sophomore Morgan Cartwright as a missing person to TUPD.

On Nov. 5, at 1:03 p.m., TUPD released a community-wide notification about Cartwright. Pete Perez, assistant police chief, described how TUPD must wait 24 hours before reporting a student missing to SAPD.

“Usually, we give it a time of usually 24 hours, but it all depends on who was the last person that saw him. When does that timeframe really start? But in this case, it was already at the 24–hour mark and as we were going through our protocols, time is ticking and we do what we can,” Perez said.

According to Perez, the student was found 30 minutes later when a friend notified TUPD.

“A friend of a friend called and we were able to get in touch with him which is fine as long as we found him. That’s the whole goal of the situation,” Perez said.
