Last year, I was introduced to a pretty spooky app called [ghost]. It supposedly allows you to talk to ghosts or spirits through the electronic voice phenomena (EVP) feature it offers (only through a $10 purchase of course.)
After a while, I forgot about the app completely. Halloween, though, always brings about the memory of spooky experiences. I thought it’d be fun to see if there was any correlation between using the overpriced EVP app on my phone and ACTUAL ghosts or spirits.
First, I headed to the fourth floor of Laurie Auditorium, as it was labeled by one of my friends as one of the most “haunted” places on campus. She told stories of the people who built the auditorium dying in mysterious ways (none of which are confirmed, but ooooo spooky). She said the contractor died from falling during construction and is said to haunt the top floor of Laurie. Not sure where she got this information from, but it makes for a good ghost story.
While there, I recorded 29 words “said” by ghosts or spirits around me. It was by far the most active area recorded, and I felt a chill in the air. Some of the words that came up included the names Edwina, Elliot, Zachary, Antia and Ron as well as words like “disappear,” “beautiful” and “storm.” I heard a couple of scuffling shoes in the 30 minutes I was there. My friend and I came up with a story that the people mentioned had disappeared in a storm and were trying to find their way to the other side. Silly, but might be the truth. Or maybe the old builders trying to warn me to escape before I met an equally mysterious fate.
After that, I wanted to see what my residence hall, Bruce Thomas Hall, had to offer in terms of spiritual activity. There were 18 words recorded in my conversation, some of which included more names and words like “comfort” twice, “trouble” and “care.” It was almost as though the ghosts were warning me that my comfort was in trouble and to take care of myself. There was only one name mentioned, Lance, which is interesting because the name Lance always popped up last semester when I used the app in Witt-Winn Residence Hall. Maybe Lance is my guardian angel.
Seeking confirmation that the spirits were looking out for my safety, I went back to my old hall Witt-Winn to see if anybody would “talk” to me. Surprisingly, I heard 13 (ooo scary number) words: “blue,” “discover,” “visitor,” “park,” “day,” “diabetes,” “basket,” “face,” “Johnie,” “tire,” “Denis,” “Tony” and “worry.” I think the spirits are hinting at a past picnic that was held by Johnie, Denis and Tony that ended in a death and maybe even murder. Though I received some pretty scary vibes, nothing that was said in the recordings correlated with any ones I’ve done in the past. Maybe I’m out of luck, or maybe the stupid app just randomizes words to say and activities to present to give off the vibe that you’re talking to a ghost.
My last destination was Elizabeth Huth Coates Library. There were a total of 13 words said with two names and words such as “understand,” “beer” and “garage” coming up. This visit just solidified the hypothesis that the words are randomized. Or maybe, the ghost is trying to understand what people are saying when they talk about frat parties in the library.
Needless to say, as a campus, we are all in extreme danger and all classes should be canceled immediately. Maybe even for the trouble, we should all get an honorary degree for our bravery. Happy Halloween and remember … be careful of Johnie, Dennis and Tony.
