During the Golfweek October Classic tournament in Destin, Florida, Trinity women’s golf wrapped up with No. 15 finish out of 24 teams, marking the end of the fall season.
While the Tigers finished middle of the pack in Florida, they fared much better in their other two tournaments this year. In the Alamo City Classic from Oct. 7 to Oct. 8, the women’s golf team won first place.
Shelby DeVore, assistant director of golf and head coach of the women’s golf team, mentioned new endeavors the team launched this fall.
“One thing that we did different this fall that we haven’t done ever is we traveled a lot more,” DeVore said. “We’ve never gone to two big trips in a fall season.”
The Golfweek October Classic was the second tournament the team played on the road this fall with the first being the Wisconsin-Whitewater TPC Invite where Trinity women placed fourth out of 17 teams.
“We know … as soon as we [travel] we need to go put for an hour … to get used to the greens. We need to see what the wind does. We need to chip in the rough and try to get a feel of the grass,” DeVore said.
Jessica Mason, junior biology major and 2024 Women’s Golf Coaches’ Association All-American, finds joy in playing away tournaments, citing it as an opportunity for team bonding.
“I think it’s more fun to go on the road,” Mason said. “Spending time with your team like that is really fun because we’re all close. Our team culture is so good, so it’s always fun to be around them.”
Since she began leading the team four years ago, DeVore has encouraged players to be involved with recruitment. Lauren Huddleston, sophomore marketing major, has taken on the role of a recruiter for the women’s team.
“[DeVore] really cares about our opinions,” Huddleston said. “The team gets to be involved in [recruiting] … I think it’s fun. It’s obviously sad if [prospects] choose not to commit to Trinity. I usually spend like a whole day with them and getting to know them.”
With the team now entering the offseason, they aim to use the time to improve their game before play resumes in January.
“As a team, we’re still continuing workouts and practice with the captains,” Huddleston said. “We’ll probably do fun challenges and games with the boys just to keep us [engaged].”
A highlight in the spring schedule is the Westbrook Invitational in Peoria, Arizona which will occur from Feb. 23 to Feb. 24.
