The Trinity student body received an email on March 19 informing us that Trinity Athletics’ policy on transgender participation in women’s sports had changed. Women’s sports at Trinity are now exclusive to cisgender women. The email was barely 100 words long.
It is evident that Trinity has capitulated to the culture war that the Republican party has been waging for years. The moral backbone this university has pretended to have regarding LGBTQ+ students has disappeared. This announcement comes in conjunction with the news that the Riley Gaines Center is sending yet another speaker to Trinity with full administrative approval.
It is perhaps inadvisable for me, as the sports editor, to write this, but I will not be silent. Transgender people, guilty of nothing, are being lambasted nationwide as frauds, predators, cheaters and generally as undesirables.
Republicans have justified repression of transgender athletes in particular in the name of “protecting women’s sports.” Curious then that U.S. conservatives have openly mocked women’s sports and women in general for years. Equally curious that their “protection” of women’s sports has involved exclusively persecuting the queer community the same way they have for decades.
Republicans are engaging in a mass discrimination campaign against transgender people intended to push them out of society. In other words, Republicans are trying to commit genocide, and Trinity has given in to one of their major demands. Republicans spent $215 million in 2024 on attack ads against one percent of the U.S. population and less than one percent of women’s athletes. If you deny what’s happening here, you are a fool or a monster.
To all you fascists out there, I know at least a few of you are reading this, I want to relay a simple message: You will lose. It may not happen soon, but your cause was doomed the moment you committed to it. You are murderers, slanderers, bigots and liars, and one day you will pay. And as for Trinity Athletics and the administration, history will remember what you’ve done.
