On March 19, Trinity University announced in an email that they had updated ATHL-0003 Trinity Athletics Transgender Participation Policy to restrict women’s sports to “student-athletes assigned female at birth only” in an effort to comply with NCAA policy. This NCAA policy from Feb. 5 altered regulations on transgender participation in sports following the Trump administration’s Executive Order 14201: “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.”
We condemn this updated university policy and the callousness of the recent email sent on March 19. While we at Trinitonian recognize the university’s need to comply with NCAA policy, the lack of support offered to the Trinity community in this announcement during this time is uncharacteristic of Trinity’s values.
One of our university’s core values is intentional inclusion. The official Trinity website’s Mission and Values page reads: “We connect across differences, acting with radical empathy and nurturing enduring relationships.” None of these sentiments apply to the unsigned email we received on March 19.
Trinitonian remains a public forum committed to the unfettered exchange of ideas through guest columns and letters to the editor. Our paper is here for you to continue the discussion.
Trinitonian’s editorial staff stands with Trinity’s transgender community.

Dear Trinity Community,
Trinity has updated the Trinity Athletics and Recreation Participation Policy for Transgender Students following the recently updated NCAA Transgender Participation Policy. The new policy limits competition in women’s sports to student-athletes assigned female at birth only. The policy permits students assigned male at birth to practice with women’s teams.
These updates take effect immediately. For detailed information about the following updates, click the link to review the full policy. For all other policy updates, kindly refer to Policy Updates.
