The Trinity softball team opened their season with a doubleheader on Wednesday, going 1-1 against Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. Trinity won the first game 4-2.

“In our first game, we played really well,” said senior outfielder Lindsay Weyand. “We got hits when we needed, we made the defensive plays we needed, and our intensity was at a good level.”

The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning after junior shortstop Brooke Sanchez started off with a triple, which was followed immediately by an RBI triple from sophomore catcher Caitlynn Dykes.

“We came out strong and played hard,” said head coach Brandi Crnkovic. “We executed well and hit with runners in scoring position.”

Although TLU tied the score in both the first and third innings, senior first baseman Megan Russell’s RBI single in the fifth and first year outfielder Kaci Wellik’s stealing of home in the sixth inning secured the victory for the Tigers.

Wellik went 2-3 in her first collegiate game, while Sanchez was 2-4 with two runs scored. Senior Sydney Friday pitched for Trinity, striking out four hitters and giving up one earned run on seven hits.

“Each inning we battled back and forth,” said senior outfielder Becca Rush. “It was a hard-fought game, but we played really well.”

TLU, however, won 8-0 in the final game of the day. The Bulldogs scored one run in the first inning, three in the second, two in the fourth and one in both the fifth and sixth innings.

“We let the intensity fall back,” Weyand said. “There were a lot of things that didn’t go our way and we didn’t really have the spark we needed, which I think made the difference.”

Sophomore Lauren Mercado started on the mound for the Tigers and gave up four earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Wellik finished the game, allowing four runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings.

Although the Tigers had six hits, they left eight players on base throughout the game.

“We came out kind of flat at first,” Rush said. “They got runners on and kept scoring off little hits, but they kept stringing the hits together and we didn’t. Overall it was an okay day but obviously we wished better.”

The Tigers next head to Round Rock, where they play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. today against Concordia University.

“We want to play to our strengths throughout the game and refocus and take control of what we can control,” Crnkovic said.
