The past few months have brought many changes to the Trinity football program.
The most recent change happened this month when the Tigers appointed Matt Uzzell as the new offensive coordinator. Uzzell, a 2001 Trinity graduate and All-American, spent one year as the Trinity offensive coordinator right after he graduated. Uzzell’s most recent experience was serving as the offensive coordinator and head track and field coach at Southside High School.
This past November, former Trinity head coach Steve Mohr retired. Mohr had been with the Tigers for 24 seasons and was one of the most prominent NCAA Division III football coaches to date.
Shortly after his step-down, Trinity appointed Jerheme Urban as head coach. Urban, a Trinity alum, All-American and retired NFL player, had been with the Tigers for two seasons before he took the head coaching position. During his first season he served as an assistant coach, and last season he took on the role of offensive coordinator.
“Matt was a couple of years older than me here at Trinity and a guy I’ve gotten to know over the last 10-12 years on a more personal level, and when the job became open he was one of the first guys I thought about. Not only is he a phenomenal coach, but he is an even better man, and I think he is the right fit for what we need. He has a stern, loving approach, which is good, as we are focused on helping these guys grow as young men and are confident in our ability as coaches, but the most important thing for us is to see them graduate on time and grow and be ready for the real world, and Matt is going to do a phenomenal job of that,” said Urban.
Uzzell says he is coming back for the players, the other coaching staff and his experience here as a student and athlete.
“My calling is to impact young men through coaching their tails off and modeling for them what a man really is. Coach Urban is top notch in all areas of this profession (Integrity, Character, Knowledge, and Passion), and expects the same from the rest of us that he surrounds himself with. I love this place and feel that this is my small way to give back to a place that was so instrumental in my growth,” said Uzzell.
The team is excited to spend next season with Uzzell and agrees that with the right coaching and strategies they can do very well.
“Next season we hope, with Coach Uzzell, to establish one of the top offenses in the DIII nation. We definitely have the skills and players to do that and with the correct utilization of these players and good strategy we could go far,” said junior quarterback Mason Blaschke.
The Tigers’ schedule has yet to be released for the 2014 season, but there will be much anticipation for Urban and Uzzell’s Trinity coaching debuts.
