Women’s head soccer coach, Lance Key, was named CaptainU Fall 2013 Division III Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year, as well as SCAC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his ten years at Trinity.

“Having our program recognized on the national level through this award and others that we have received is a great testament to the qualities and standards that we pursue. These types of awards only come as a result of the staff and players truly collaborating in an effort to create something special. It is certainly another source of pride for this team,” said Key.

This past season, Key led the women’s team to the NCAA Division III Championship game, which was held in San Antonio at Toyota Field. The Tigers’ record for the season was 25-1-2. They competed in their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament and won their eighth SCAC Championship with Key. Assistant coach Owen Collie also received the NSCAA Assistant Regional Coach of the Year.

“Within the program, we recognize that any individual that receives recognition is a result of the team’s body of work over a given season. I’ve been extremely blessed over the course of the past ten years to be surrounded by incredible character, talent and support,” Key said.

Junior midfielders Emily Jorgens and Kelsey Falcone were elected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and D3soccer.com All-America Teams.

“It’s been such an incredible experience playing for him. Both he and our assistant coach have received national honors. As for receiving All-American, obviously I couldn’t get here without the rest of my team. It’s great receiving that recognition that we deserve and hopefully we can win it all next year,” said junior midfielder Kelsey Falcone.

Jorgens was also named Capital One Academic All-American of the Year and received the NCAA Elite 89 Award for the highest grade point average at the semifinals and final matches. Jorgens broke Trinity’s records for number of assists in a single game, in a single season and throughout an entire career, with five, 30 and 61, respectively. Senior defender Jennifer White and senior forward Shelby Guenthardt were also elected to the Capital One Academic All-America team.

“We believe that the student-athletes within the program are often the greatest sources of influence on each other. As a staff, our objective is to be thorough and exhaustive in the process of recruiting young women to this program to ensure they share the value system that we adhere to,” Key said.

Key acknowledges that the team’s recruiting process is not that simple to describe.  However, he is adamant that the team’s culture is a vital part of their success.

“Obviously there’s a great deal more that goes into the process, and particularly that goes into helping each individual gain and maintain the confidence to face adversity as it comes, but we believe the culture is designed to facilitate accommodating the needs of those within it,” Key said.
