Earlier in the week, the men’s and women’s golf teams competed in the West Regional Invitational in Georgetown, Texas.
Both teams started play on Monday, April 6 and finished the tournament Tuesday, April 7.
The women entered the West Region Invitational ranked 16th in Division III. After shooting an opening-round 339, they stood in third place behind UT-Tyler and University Mary Hardin-Baylor. First year Taylor Moser and senior Alessa Hutter were tied for eighth after both shot 10-over (82), only four strokes behind the leader. Behind Moser and Hutter were junior Brigette Lee (84, tied for 14th), sophomore Hanna Niner (86, 22nd), junior Madeline Moran (87, tied for 23rd) and first year Shelby DeVore (91, tied for 35th).
Day two was a day of consistency, shooting a 340 to finish third in the tournament (679 total).
Niner posted the top score for Trinity as she improved by seven strokes with a 7-over to finish tied at 16th (165 total). Niner was joined at 16th by teammate Hutter, who shot an 83 in the final round.Lee came in tied for 22nd after carding an 86 on day two (170 total). Moran and Moser tied for 29th, each totaling 173 for the tournament, while DeVore ended in 36th (180 total).
“We didn’t play well in this tournament last year and we still went on to win SCAC for the first time since before a lot of us were born,” Niner said. “I don’t feel any less confident in our team heading into SCAC. Different days, different course, different results, this time just better results!”
Like the women, the men’s golf team finished day one in third place after shooting a two-round 621 (314, 307). 17th-ranked Trinity was two strokes behind second place Concordia University, with Schreiner University leading the pack (602). Sophomore Redmond Lyonsr (74, 77) and senior Kalen Vos both shot 7-over (75-76) to be tied for seventh. Lyons and Vos were followed by teammates junior Alex Hartzell and sophomores Will Street and Diego Trevino, who all tied for 22nd (17-over). Senior Felipe Benalcazar was tied for 31st after day one (21-over).
Also like the women, the men were consistent on the second day, finishing the tournament third overall (922 total). Lyons shot 2-over (225 total) to tie for fifth while Vos shot 4-over (227 total) to finish eighth.
Trevino finished strong, shooting Trinity’s best score of the tournament at par, finishing 14th (233 total). Other Tiger golfers were Street in 25th (240 total), Hartzell 26th (241 total) and Benalcazar tied for 28th (244 total).
This was the last tournament for both teams before they compete in the SCAC Championships, which is set to take place April 20-21 in Blanco, Texas.
“I feel like all year I’ve been a part of one of the most talented and deepest teams in the nation,” Lyons said. “I feel like conference is there for us to take if we want it, but that being said it’s something we have to work for, and I think how we finish there [SCAC] against some of the top ranked teams will be a result of what we put into it.”
