After their trip to California, both the men’s and women’s tennis team came back over the weekend to collect multiple team wins.
Both played Division II Midwestern State University and Division III Texas Lutheran University. The men’s team added in a doubleheader, playing St. Mary’s University on Saturday.
Friday, March 27, the women’s team lost to Midwestern State 8-1 with their only win coming from sophomore Liza Southwick.
Their match on Saturday, March 28, against Texas Lutheran resulted in an 8-1 win.
“The girls played really well during that match. Even though we won 8-1, I felt like we competed really well,” said junior Caroline White.
The women are now 6-8 going into the end of the season. Their next matches are at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. this Saturday, April 11, at home in a doubleheader against Schreiner University and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The men’s team finished on March 27 with a loss as well to Midwestern State 7-2.
Saturday, March 28, they beat Texas Lutheran in a sweep at 9-0 and finished the weekend off strong with a 6-3 victory over St. Mary’s.
Next the women play two matches on April 11. The first match is against Schreiner away at 10 a.m., then the Tigers return home to play Texas A&M-Kingsville at 3 p.m.
“It offered some of us, including myself, in the middle of the lineup the chance to prove ourselves and get some good experience out on the court. This is important since we will be losing three seniors that play very key spots. Next year we will need some of us to step it up big time to try to fill that void as best we can,” said first year Alavo Hobbs.
The men’s team is now 12-7 heading into the end of the season. With five matches left until conference, they will play their last DI match against UTSA, at 10 a.m Saturday, April 11.
“For us it’s a bit late season, playing a DI school, to get stiff competition to where we are staying sharp and having a real sense of where we are,” said coach Russell McMindes on the upcoming match. “For us we get an opportunity to compete and go for it without having to worry so much.”
