Over the weekend of April 11, Trinity track and field took on different competitors from opposing school during the University of the Incarnate Word Invitational.

The Tigers ran strong during the women’s 4×100 relay. The team of junior Bailey Drury, and first years Nkoli Nweke, Elizabeth Peters and Britney Sullivan crossed the finish line at 48.01 seconds coming in second place overall, breaking the current school record.

“Going in to the meet, our goal was definitely to get a faster time so we could qualify for Nationals in May. So getting down to a lower time and breaking the record all in one was a double win for the relay team,” Sullivan said.

Nweke followed the relay with another record-breaking finish. Although she had previously broken the school record during the meet at Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, California, she followed it up with an even faster time during the UIW Invitational. During the women’s 100 meters, Nweke clocked in a 12.27 seconds coming in 10th place overall.

In the men’s events, junior Taylor Piske  was the runner-up in the men’s 5,000 meters finishing at 15:17.31. Piske was followed by sophomore Austin Brown in fifth place (15:54.97).

“For some of us, UIW was an opportunity for redemption after having a painful and disappointing performance at the Pamona-Pitzer Invite the week before,” Piske said. “It was a low-key meet that let us gain a little self-confidence before heading into conference.”

First year Matt Love placed fourth in discus with a 47.16 meter throw while first year Louie Montoto finished the high-jump with 1.85 meters coming in fifth place.

During the 2014 Southern Collegiate Conference Championships the men won and the women finished in second. Both teams hope to capture the championship this year.

“As a team we really want to execute in our individual events, but most importantly come together to win conference on both the men’s and women’s side,” Nweke said.

The Tigers will host the conference meet April 24-25.
