Mens+tennis+team+gets+important+wins

Saturday, April 11, Trinity men’s tennis played local DI team University of Texas at San Antonio.

UTSA started the match winning all three doubles points as they were using DI regulation for the overall scoring. No. 1 doubles Jordan Mayer and Aaron Skinner lost 8-3 while No. 2 doubles Adam Krull and Alvaro Hobbs lost 8-2. No. 3 doubles finished with Chas Mayer and Charlie Curtis losing 8-5.

“It’s always a lot of fun to go out there and play a D1 school because we always feel that we can be extremely competitive,” Mayer said. “While we struggled in dubs, we had a couple of guys go three sets in singles and that’s a positive takeaway when you’re playing teams of that caliber.”

The Tigers came back with a fight in singles.  Mayer lost a tight match at 10-8 in a third set at No. 2 singles while fellow senior Charlie Curtis lost in a close three-set match at No. 4 single 10-7 in the third. The lone win came from sophomore Chas Mayer who finished the match 6-1, 6-2.

“Last weekend was a tough matchup.  UTSA is a good program and it was really just nice to get back out and compete against a high level,” said head coach Russell McMindes. “The biggest takeaway is that we still have room for improvement to reach our end-of-the-season goals.”

With only four matches left in the season, the men’s team  headed to North Texas last weekend, going 3-0 with a cancellation in the last match due to weather.

“I’m looking for them to get some strong results and get the confidence and momentum headed in the right direction,” McMindes said regarding the end of the season and conference.

Right now the Tigers are ranked No. 7 in the country and will attempt to defend their conference title April 24-26 in Georgetown, Texas.

“We are looking forward to getting a lot of matches in and having the opportunity to play a variety of teams. Right now the goal is for us to play the right way which means playing effectively,” C. Mayer said. “Naturally we want to come out of Georgetown with the conference title so that’s what we need to work for in practice this week.”
