As Hurricane Harvey approaches the Texas coast, the Trinity community is beginning to prepare for heavy rain, wind and potential flooding throughout San Antonio. According to the National Weather Service, Harvey is expected to make landfall on Friday or Saturday and could potentially last throughout the weekend.
Though the Trinity University Crisis Management Team does not think that San Antonio will face the bulk of the storm, they sent an email to students, faculty and staff advising them to monitor the weather and pay attention to any updates from the university.
“The campus is in great condition and flooding is not expected to negatively impact the campus. Though, with as unpredictable as the weather is, we will continue to monitor the campus and respond accordingly,” said Ivan Pendergast, crisis management team coordinator.
Pendergast also advised students to sign up for TrinAlert in order to get updates from the university regarding the impact of Harvey.
The Weather Channel has predicted that San Antonio could see up to 12 inches of rain this weekend with strong chances of flooding. Additionally, mayor Ron Nirenberg issued a local disaster declaration for Bexar County on Thursday afternoon.
In order to ensure the safety of all of the Trinity community here are some tips in order to stay safe during Hurricane Harvey.
- Avoid being on the roads unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to drive, be on the lookout for flooded roads.
- If you come across flooded roads follow the advice “Turn around, don’t drown.”
- Stay away from low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.
- Stock up on water and food for the weekend. Having a first aid kit in your dorm or house is also a smart idea.
- Pay attention to weather alerts from Trinity and news outlets.
