Previously, on SGA: Heating up on and off campus

Previously%2C+on+SGA%3A+Heating+up+on+and+off+campus

This SGA meeting was held on the 17th of January, 2024

CLIMATE CHECK:
Opening climate check, first-year Senator Madelyn Stovall informed SGA that the heating in Harold D. Herndon Hall had stopped functioning in the cold weather. Sophomore Senator Odi Aneji added that Bruce Thomas Hall was experiencing similar issues. These concerns were addressed by sophomore Senator Bocar Diagana, who said heating systems in both dorms had been repaired by Wednesday evening.

In the event of further trouble, Advisor Bernadette Buchanan and President Danny Nguyen both advised constituents to communicate with their resident assistants and put in work orders accordingly to keep Facilities Services aware of developments. Advisor Buchanan also suggested that constituents check their emails to stay informed about ongoing efforts to fix problems on Facilities Services’ radar.

Junior Senator Ella Charbonnet provided an update on the menstrual product dispensers around campus, saying that all dispensers had been emptied after initially being refilled at the beginning of the semester. To prevent materials from running out so quickly in the future, Senator Charbonnet plans to place signs encouraging students to only take one item at a time. For those who had been taking more than their share of menstrual products, Senator Charbonnet had just one thing to say: “buy your own box.”

Vice President Caterina Mora asked for a show of hands from senators interested in funding new proposals, including the implementation of charging stations for electric vehicles on campus, new picnic tables and a senior portrait project. A number of senators indicated interest in helping with each of the proposed projects.

FUNDING PRESENTATION:
SGA — Tiger’s Night Out Wave Two. Fully funded $5,250.00.
President Danny Nguyen presented a reimbursement request for $5,250 regarding the second wave of the Tiger’s Night Out event. SGA initially funded 290 tickets to the upcoming San Antonio Spurs game on Jan. 26, with all tickets being claimed within thirty seconds of being released to students last semester. This strong demand facilitated the procurement of 150 more tickets at $35 each. The second wave of tickets was released earlier this week, and all 150 tickets were claimed within a minute.

Senator Andrew Phillips inquired about needing a second wave for similar events in the future as opposed to offering more tickets upfront, to which President Nguyen responded that SGA had been focused on keeping the costs the same as last year’s Tiger’s Night Out, though Spurs ticket prices increased in the span of the last year.

Senator Waters motioned to fully fund the request of $5,250. Senior Senator Nadesh Vaithianathan seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

OFFICER REPORTS:
Vice President Mora gave an update on the status of the recently greenlit Project HOME, informing SGA that funding for last semester’s student organizations had been sent, and that she would let SGA know when spring funding is set to be consigned. Vice President Mora also noted that the creation of new student organizations is currently paused.
