At 8 p.m. Saturday, March 23, in the Fiesta Room, Student Programming Board hosts a concert by Tommy & the High Pilots, an alternative rock band from Santa Barbara, Calif.

SPB executive members attended the 2012 Central Region Conference of the National Association for Campus Activities, a showcase of entertainers for college performances, including Tommy & the High Pilots.

“We saw musicians, comedians, dancers and many more types of entertainers,” said Omoyemi Idowu, director of SPB.  “When Tommy & The Highpilots performed, we were definitely entertained and enjoyed their music. We immediately wanted to bring them to campus, because it is the kind of music and vibe that a lot of Trinity students are into.”

Tommy & the High Pilots are currently on tour around the U.S., including stops at other colleges and music festivals.

“They are a great college band”¦ They played at Texas State earlier this week and played South by Southwest in Austin last weekend,” said Briana McGlamory, coordinator, for fraternity and sorority life.  “The concert will be fun and upbeat with awesome music and a nice sound/lighting combo.”

The first 100 concert attendees will also receive a free t-shirt promoting SPB’s next event, Headphone Disco.

“Imagine a dance party with two different DJs, and you can choose which station to listen to with just the click of the button on your headphones. The dance craze started in the U.K., so we think it will be a lot of fun,” Idowu said.

The money for the concert comes from the student activity fee which was allocated to SPB’s budget by the Association of Student Representatives.

“We’d like for people to take advantage of the money from their student activities fee,” said Deborah Kilpatrick, associate director of concerts for SPB. “If students attended all of SPB’s events, they would get more than their money’s worth.”

The student activity fee funds this concert as well as SPB’s other events keeping them free for students, and Idowu believes that that is something students should take advantage of.

“[Tommy & the High Pilots] are an up-and-coming band with a lot of good feedback from other campuses they have performed at. This will be your chance to attend a free concert by them before they start getting big and famous and maybe even charging $100 a ticket,” Idowu said.

“This is the last concert of the year until welcome week next year,” Kilpatrick said, “So if people want good, free music, then this is a good place to get it.”
