Sheena Kaushish’s passing (see Page 3) is a tragedy and it will continue to affect our community and those that knew her, but it’s also important to understand the larger theme that emerged this week: take care of yourselves and each other.

Trinity’s first Mental Health Awareness Week, sponsored by the Trinity Progressives and other on-campus organizations, kicks off today at 8 p.m. with a showing of “Silver Linings Playbook” in Northrup 040 (see Page 14).  The rest of the week is sure to be educational and fun with panels, discussions, a social media campaign, depression screenings and a Stress-Free Zone that will feature mini-ponies, yoga, and free food.

The week is a chance to learn more about how to stay healthy and support those that may be struggling. For those individuals who are struggling or need someone to talk to, we hope this week will be a reminder that you are not alone and that our community cares about you.

The first step is to start talking. Share your thoughts with the community on Twitter by using the hashtag “#Trinitruths” and discuss the role mental health plays in your life and our community. By having informed, inclusive discussions, there’s the possibility we can change the way people think about mental health. The second step is to listen and learn from those around us.

Finally, remember that mental health shouldn’t just be discussed one week out of the year. It’s important to remain vigilant and contact Counseling Services if you or a friend need help. Call their office at 210-999-7411 to schedule an appointment or swing by the office located upstairs in the Coates University Center.
