The Eisners are the annual comic awards. Basically, they’re the Oscars for comics. Every year, the winners are announced at the San Diego Comic Convention at the end of Juy.
Best Humor Publication: “Vader’s Little Princess” by Jeffrey Brown
Ahhh, I love Jeffrey Brown (sometimes he’s known as Chester Brown). His “Star Wars” doodles are super cute, but he’s worth checking out for his o ther work, which is mostly autobiographical.
Best Painter/Multimedia Artist: Fiona Staples, “Saga”
So deserved. I’m of course a fan of seeing women in comics get recognized for their exemplary work, and Fiona Staples is a pretty incredible artist, crafting the fantasy worlds of “Saga” with care and precision.
Best Writer/Artist: Jaime Hernandez, “Love and Rockets: New Stories, Vol 6″
A favorite of our very own Aaron Delwiche, associate professor of communication, Jaime and his brother Gilbert and Mario, famously known as Los Bros Hernandez, created this series in the 1980s and continue to do stellar work. “Love & Rockets”, one of the most beloved alternative comic series, focuses on Mexican and Mexican-American culture.
Best Cover Artist: David Aja, “Hawkeye”
Hawkeye has recieved attention for a lot of reasons this past year, and one huge reason is its aesthetic: the minimalist covers David Aja created look like nothing else on the newsstands.
Best Single Issue: “Hawkeye #11: Pizza Is My Business”
Read it. Seriously.
Best Continuing Series: “Saga”
I don’t think anyone expected “Saga” to lose this. This “Star Wars” meets “Romeo and Juliet” story continues to be fresh.
Will Eisner Hall of Fame: Sheldon Moldoff, Alan Moore, Hiyao Miyazaki, Orrin Evans, Irwin Hasen.
These are among the most deserving dudes in the biz. Sheldon Moldoff was a ghost aritst on early “Batman”; Miyazaki is obviously an incredible animated filmmaker; Orrin Evans printed “All-Negro Comics”; Irwin Hasen drew “Dondi” (about a war orphan) in the 1950s, and Alan Moore should need no explanation (the magician behind “Watchmen”, “V For Vendetta”, “League of Extraordinary Gentleman”, “From Hell”, etc).
The Emmys
To be frank with you, dear readers, the Emmys, were a disappointment to me personally. I was rooting for a lot of underdogs, to be fair, but I was surprised by unsurprising the winners were across the board.
Shows and People Snubbed
“Game of Thrones”. This past season continued its tradition to entertain, astonish, and horrify viewers, but it is truly one of the strongest shows on TV. I was really hoping Dinklage or Headey would manage to get one.
Cary Joji Fukunaga, “True Detective.” Regardless of your opinion on this much-discussed show, the direction was truly incredile (that long shot?!).
They (Probably) Got It Right
“Fargo”. This spiritual successor to the Coen brothers movie of the same name was unique, fascinating, and twisted to watch.
Uggghh Stop It
Jim Parsons, “The Big Bang Theory.” Like, seriously? Enough already!
