Amy Goodman will be speaking at Trinity University at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Stieren Theater as part of the Maverick Lecture Series, which is made possible by the William and Salome Scanlan Foundation. Goodman will discuss the role independent media play in wars and elections.

Goodman is the host of and co-founder of the program “Democracy Now!” which, according to their official website, is a daily, national and independent news program. Goodman was the first journalist to ever win the “Right Livelihood Award,” a prestigious award established in 1980 often referred to as the “Alternative Nobel Prize,” according to the Right Livelihood Award Foundation’s website.

Professors and students alike are excited for Goodman’s lecture. Robert Huesca, director of international programs and professor of communication, spoke of his excitement for Goodman’s appearance at Trinity. He encouraged students to attend and praised Goodman for what she has achieved in her career.

“She is one of the nation’s top independent journalists, a real model of intelligence, tenacity and innovativeness,” Huesca said. “Her interview with Bill Clinton is one of the most mesmerizing moments of live journalism ever recorded.”

Huesca is not the only person that is excited for Goodman’s lecture. Sophomore Bailee Manzer only recently heard of Goodman, but in the short time she has been familiar with her she has acquired a massive respect and admiration for her work and achievements in her field. She will be attending the lecture and is interested in what Goodman has to say.

“My mom called me and told me that I should see the lecture coming up from this woman I had never heard of before,” Manzer said. “I did a little research and she seemed interesting, so I listened to some of her work and just fell in love. Students will truly understand the importance of journalism after listening to her.”

In addition to her lecture, Goodman will have a student-only meeting at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday in Storch 113.

Goodman will be filming her show, “Democracy Now!,” in Trinity’s TigerTV live studio on Wednesday morning. It is currently possible that Trinity community members will be allowed to attend  the live filming.

“I think it’s a really unique opportunity to work with someone who is in broadcast journalism,” said junior Davis Alcorn, TigerTV station programming manager. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with someone who is so established in the field.”
