Alamo drafthouse: The love child of a foodie and a film buff

Watching movies is one of my favorite ways to procrastinate. The only thing better than a Netflix marathon is going to the movies and spending a couple of hours there, reaping the benefits of a large purse that allows me to sneak in copious amounts of candy.

Spending hours in front of a great film as a mental reprieve from homework is that much more appealing when it is done off campus.

These activities are even better when you can include junk food. And while I haven’t tried sneaking in pizza slices or cheese fries, it has certainly occurred to me that these would pair well with the latest action-packed film.

To save myself from going to these extremes, I go to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, where I can order these items like a normal person.

An Austin hotspot that’s now opened locations across the state, this theater chain allows you to order food while you watch the movie, which is a lot more exciting than it sounds. The type of food they offer is everything you want while watching a movie: pizza, nachos, beer, burgers””essentially a foodie’s paradise.

You can order anything from a barbecue chicken pizza to a basil pesto frittata for brunch.

Those of age can also enjoy a wide selection of speciality beers and drinks. And some locations include speciality coffee beverages for those of us who are too cool to sip a milkshake.

While I don’t consider myself a film buff by any means, when I go to this theater, I feel that much closer to becoming one. Outside of the regular blockbusters that are shown at almost every theater, they feature special screenings of old favorites like “Grease” sing-alongs, or, depending on the time of year, there are also themed screenings of older films.

For example, the location nearest to Trinity, the Park North Alamo Drafthouse””just off of Loop 410 by North Star Mall””has a series of Halloween and Beerfest themed films that will be shown next week. On Monday, Oct. 13, there will be a sing-along “Little Shop of Horrors” showing, and a “Shaun of the Dead” quote-along is scheduled for Thursday.

For the beer lovers among us, Drafthouse will celebrate San Antonio Beerfest early by watching the film “Beerfest” on Tuesday, and by serving the celebrated brown ales in honor of said festival.

Other locations in San Antonio will show different films, such as “Hocus Pocus” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” with a sing-along portion to bring in the Halloween spirit.

While these theaters offer plenty of opportunities to shout lines at the screen, some events go beyond the basic quote-along.

For example, fans of “The Princess Bride” can attend a special screening on Monday, Oct. 20, where they can watch the quote-along and participate with props such as inflatable swords.

Following the film, there will be a live stream of a Q&A session with none other than Cary Elwes. Each member of the audience will receive “Princess Bride” pint glass as well as a signed copy of Elwes memoir, “As You Wish.”

The entire experience at an Alamo Drafthouse theater is pretty unique, even if you are watching a newly released film.

Rather than standard previews that showcase the next blockbuster film, you will watch a montage of old previews and advertisements that pertain to the specific film you are watching.

With various locations across the city, you have access to a sweet cinema experience all over San Antonio. No matter your cinematic taste, that experience is worth it.
