The Student Programming Board is hosting its first ever Halloween-themed event on Thursday, Oct. 30.

This new idea for a Halloween event comes as SPB is trying to change things up and put on larger events for the student body.

“We are trying to go bigger and better on all of our events. We thought maybe we can do fewer events and make each of them really strong,” said senior Jamie Banks, SPB traditions chair.

The event will be similar to a fall festival with individual booths operated by various student organizations. Hosted on the Esplanade, there will be stations for face painting, henna, wax hands, a photo booth and lots of candy. A stage will be set up, featuring performances from several dance groups and the Trinitones and AcaBellas. The event will culminate with a showing of a Halloween movie, “Hocus Pocus,” at the fountain in usual SPB fashion.

“The whole aim of Monster Mash is to have a carnival-type festival for Trinity that SPB puts on. We think it’s kind of a cool way to boost the whole university community spirit within this new kind of Halloween twist,” said sophomore Benjamin Gomez, concert chair.

Gomez, who is also the Student Ambassadors Pumpkin Party Chair, coordinated the two events to make each of them more successful. The Pumpkin Party is open to both students and alumni and will take place at the Murchison fire pit. Party-goers can then migrate up to the Esplanade for Monster Mash so that alumni and students can continue to interact.

“SPB has been trying new things and trying to think outside the box with events and really incorporate as many people as possible this year, and so far they have been really successful,” Gomez said. “We have had a great turnout at all of the events this year.”

TUVAC is also partnering  with SPB to make Monster Mash a large event with their annual event of bringing children to Trinity to trick-or-treat around the dorms. TUVAC also planned another Halloween event, and instead of having multiple events by the various student organizations, SPB decided to combine them all into one event.

“Before the students come in, we are going to have the TUVAC kids who trick-or-treat around the residence halls come around the fair, and so are the alumni that are going to be there that weekend,” said sophomore Christina Moore, press relations co-chair for SPB.

SPB also combined their efforts with TUVAC for a pumpkin painting event.

“TUVAC had a pumpkin painting type of event that would be going on that day, so SPB just kind of latched on and took over their event,” Moore said.

SPB hopes to involve as many student organizations as possible to make the event successful and well attended.
