Campus Publications selects next year’s leaders

As the halfway point of the semester has come and gone, Trinity’s two student-run publications, the Trinitonian newspaper and Mirage yearbook, have begun to make preparations for next year. The week before spring break, the Board of Campus Publications selected the students that will hold next year’s top editor positions.

Junior Luke Wise and sophomore Claire Hoobler-Curtis were hired as the Trinitonian’s 2015-2016 editor-in-chief and managing editor, respectively. Each currently holds a section editor position on the Trinitonian staff. Their experience was one quality the Board of Campus Publications sought for the students who would fill these positions.

“We look for students with experience as well as personal qualities, like the ability to motivate and hold others accountable,” said board member Robert Huesca.

In contrast, sophomore Katy Freeman and first year Shelby DeVore, were hired as co-editors of the Mirage. The co-editor structure is new this year and is one of the first ways these students brought new ideas and enthusiasm to the publication, which was another ideal quality.

“Creativity, enthusiasm, dedication and flexibility were all important qualities we were looking for,” said board member Susie Gonzalez.

The Board of Campus Publications is comprised of students, faculty and staff members and is responsible for the oversight and direction of Trinity’s student-run publications. Members feel that campus publications is an important asset of the university.

“The Trinitonian acts as a news source for the student body and helps keep students informed. The Mirage is like a time capsule where we can look back at what brought us together,” said board member Cat Clark. “The editors are important because they hold everyone accountable.”

Additionally, the board selected Christina Moore as the Trinitonian ad director and Cori Whang as the business manager. Each of the new leaders went through a selection process that required several steps.

“The application required the students to answer an extensive list of questions,” Huesca said. “Each applicant supplied a resume in addition to going through an in-person interview process.”

These new hires will assume their positions upon the completion of the semester. Be on the lookout for more information about joining the campus publications staff in upcoming weeks.
