“My daughter put together a Spotify playlist, and it’s got a lot of different stuff in it. I’m a big Taylor Swift fan, and I recently completed and edited a collection of essays about her work. With another colleague, I will be teaching [a course].”

“I usually listen to jazz or, on the radio, I listen to 80s alternative. I also listen to 40s Junction, which is 1940s music. There are a lot of World War II songs. A funny one is ‘Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.’ Otherwise, there are standards like ‘Lady and the Tramp.’”

“Style-wise, R&B. I would say my favorite singers from America would be Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. Of course, I’m originally from China, so I listen to some Chinese music. J Chou, I think he’s the most popular R&B singer in China right now.”

“In my heavy rotation right now, Johnny Blue Skies. He used to be Sturgill Simpson, but now he’s called Johnny Blue Skies. The album is incredible. I think it’s one of the best albums I’ve ever heard, so I recommend. And then Flatland Cavalry and Charley Crockett.”

“This weekend, I listened to one of Tom Petty’s early albums, ‘Full Moon Fever,’ and I also listened to a couple of The Beatles albums. I always come back to the ‘White Album’ if I want something really interesting and challenging.”

“I finished an audiobook on Audible, ‘When Breath Becomes Air.’ Highly recommend. Last week, I listened to a podcast, the ‘Hidden Brain’ podcast. My younger brother, last week, sent me the new Disney covers album, ‘A Whole New Sound,’ and it’s pop-punk covers of Disney songs from my childhood. ”

What kind of music have you been listening to recently?
“Lately, I’ve been listening to Miles Davis’s second great quintet, particularly the albums between ‘Seven Steps to Heaven’ and ‘Miles in the Sky,’ which is a formative period for this particular type of jazz called post-bop. Miles had two really important groups. This is the second group, and the album that I’ve been listening to a lot is called ESP.”
