“Every time I ever got injured by anything, my mom would use ice as a solution for everything. She would just say, ‘Oh, is it a bug bite, did you fall on your knees, are you bleeding? Put ice on it.’”
And what about for an illness?
“Water. A lot of water, yeah. My mom was a huge water person. Different forms of water.”

Norah Distel, sophomore art history major
“When we were sick when I was younger, my mom would put us in the shower to sort of steam everything. And she would also have us eat raw cloves of garlic, sometimes dipped in honey. I’m not sure how effective it was, but I definitely remember it.”

Garrett Machado, junior biology major
“Whenever I was feeling down, my mom would always make cornbread or muffins to cheer me up.”

Marc Sonnier, junior business analytics and technology major
“My grandma would always tell me if I got the hiccups, to take a glass of ice water, put a fork in it with the tongs down and chug the whole thing, and it would go away.”

Ivanna Bass Caldera, senior communication and global Latinx studies double-major
“[What] my mom would do is an egg cleanse. I think it’s a traditional Mexican remedy, where they rub an egg around your forehead in a cross, and then around your arms and then they say a prayer. And then at the very end, they do around the bottom of your feet to take out all the energy. And then she cracks it in a little glass or cup of water, and puts it under your bed. And then the next day you look at the egg and based on how cooked it is, that’s how much bad energy you had inside of yourself.”

Aaron Rios, Coates Library Starbucks barista
“It’s not exactly a remedy per se, but it’s something we always do when we’re sick. So, if the other person feels sick, throughout the night we make sure to hold the other person’s hand so when they wake up it kinda feels like we’re sharing that sickness, so they wake up feeling a little bit better each day.”

Emily De Los Santos, sophomore psychology major
“I had COVID last weekend, and my dad told me to make tea with ginger, cinnamon, lemon, and then I’m COVID-free.”

Thomas Farias, senior international studies major
“Well, when I was little and I would get sick, I would usually just eat sand. And that would fix the problem most of the time.”
