Think about where you get your news now — your non-Trinitonian news. Do you have a subscription to a print paper? Do you stop by the stands when you grab your groceries at H-E-B? Or do you read it online?
I’d bet that most, if not all, of you get your news online. Whether you have the San Antonio Express-News app downloaded on your phone, you click on articles on your laptop or you occasionally peek in the news app, you’re probably getting your news digitally. You likely can’t even remember the last time you held a non-Trinitonian newspaper in your hands.
That’s why we’re publishing our pieces online first this semester. We know where you get your news, and we want to meet you there.
This means you can expect a few things from us. If there was a visiting author you missed, you’ll know what they said a few days after, not a week and a half after. If you can’t wait to read our movie reviews every Friday, you’ll get them even earlier — like on Monday or Tuesday.
This also means that some of our coverage will be shorter. We’ve consistently had three sources and around 700-800 words for every article that comes out. We recognize that’s not necessary for every article. Sometimes we just need one source; sometimes we need dozens. This means two things. One, we won’t have to bother you for interviews just to reach our source quota anymore. Two, we’ll have more time to get hard-hitting, investigative pieces to you.
For all our column lovers, don’t worry. You’ll still hear the same amount from our columnists; you’ll just hear from them earlier. Plus, we’re adding news analysis pieces. You can even check out our first one right below this editorial.
And if you are a print lover — if you do happen to get papers thrown in your front yard or grab them when you get your groceries — our print paper isn’t going away. It’s going to get better. Each one will only be 12 pages (sans our special editions), and they won’t include all our coverage. Think of it like a highlight of all of our best pieces.
We’ll have things like calendars for sports games and club events happening on campus (if your event isn’t on T-space, be sure to let us know by emailing [email protected] with details before the first issue of every month) and other fun, print-only additions.
I’ll admit, there are some personal reasons we’re publishing pieces early, too. Namely, it’ll make our production nights so much easier. No more content editing until 4 a.m. No more weekly whiplash from working endlessly for three days straight to trying to maintain my sanity after pulling Wednesday all-nighters.
But the biggest reason we’re doing this is for you. We want you to get your news quicker. We want you to see our best stuff in print. We’re really excited to share this new step in the Trinitonian’s journey. Follow along on our website, trinitonian.com.
