No matter what the event, it’s safe to say that the most important aspect of Fiesta San Antonio is the delicious grub. At least, I think so. The problem is that there are so many events to attend and opportunities to stuff myself to the brim that I often get too confused and discouraged and just stay home. So, to avoid anybody else encountering this problem, here is a list of the top five best events to attend for the food.
Fiesta Oyster Bake
Date and Time: April 17 from 5 P.M. to 11 P.M.
and April 18 from 11 A.M. to 11 P.M.
Location: St. Mary’s University Campus
The Fiesta Oyster Bake is a token of the entire event. An entirely volunteer-driven music festival that raises money for St. Mary’s University students’ scholarship funds, you can go, eat some oysters and feel incredibly good about yourself. Go explore the campus, stop and eat some delicious food and listen to music from artists like Frankie Ballard, P.O.D., Sevendust and Nonpoint. It’s sure to oy-stir your interest.
Night in Old San Antonio
Date and Time: April 21 to April 24 from 5:30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M.
Location: La Villita
If you want diverse, delicious foods that celebrate the many aspects of sour city’s culture, you needn’t look any further than Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA). It’s a giant eating festival that splits itself into different sections like China Town, French Quarter and Irish Flats to offer a global eating experience. Every area serves food specific to its culture. For example, if you’re hankering for a plate of potato skins, head to Irish Flats to get your fill. Live music will also be playing.
Taste of New Orleans
Date and Time: April 17 from 5 P.M. to 11 P.M.
and April 18 to April 19 from 11 A.M. to 11 P.M.
Location: Sunken Garden Theater
In the mood for some Creole and Cajun gumbo, crawfish, shrimp or red beans and rice? This is the event you need in your life. Come listen to some jazz or join the parade led by a brass band. Proceeds will go to the non-profit organization San Antonio Zulu Association, which hopes to reach all areas of the SA community through scholarship opportunities.
Chili Queens Chili Cook-Off
Date and Time: April 19 from 3 P.M. to 8 P.M.
Location: Bonham Exchange
Put on by The Happy Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing overall positivity among San Antonio residents, the Chili Queens Chili Cook-Off is one of the most fun and engaging Fiesta events. Come dressed in tacky outfits with your best dish of chili for the chance to win Tackiest Queen (a title available to all genders). If you feel like moving around a bit, you can go dance on the Bonham Exchange dance floor.
Fiesta de los Reyes
Date and Time: April 17 to April 26 from 10 A.M. to 1 A.M.
Location: Market Square
Who wouldn’t want to party with kings? As one of the largest free events at Fiesta that is free, Fiesta de los Reyes offers many types of cuisines including hamburgers, seafood and Tex Mex. Listen to a variety of live music including jazz and western while walking through historic Market Square. This event is sponsored by the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation, which aims to provide scholarship opportunities around San Antonio.
