Sidewalk Symposium — Senior Spotlight
As the school year draws to a close and students begin preparing for summer plans, the Class of 2023 is looking forward to entering the world diplomas in hand. The Trinitonian asked senior students around Coates Library about their plans after graduation and the best and worst of their time at Trinity.
Erin Farrow, senior marketing major
Do you have post-grad plans?
Currently I’m still talking to some companies about where I’m going to be, but most likely I’m gonna be in a company in Dallas.
What’s one thing that you’re going to miss about Trinity?
The community here is really good, so I guess it’s probably that. I really love everyone here.
What’s one thing you’re definitely not going to miss about Trinity?
Honestly, the bathrooms here are terrible, so probably those.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Trinity?
I’ve had many laughs but I can’t remember specifically what I laughed about. Favorite memory though was probably … going out every Thursday for our little Trinity Thursbays.
Dayne Derrik, senior finance major
Do you have post-grad plans?
I’m working in corporate construction as a site engineer.
What’s one thing that you’re going to miss about Trinity?
Not very much.
What’s one thing you’re definitely not going to miss about Trinity?
I guess I’m excited not to have to do any schoolwork or busy work.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Trinity?
Living in the dorms at Witt-Winn. Had a great time there.
Caleb Harmel, senior finance and accounting double-major
Do you have post-grad plans?
I’m not 100% sure, but my dad owns an electric company in Burton, so I’m thinking about going and working back there. Yeah, maybe at Frost [Bank] also just kind of in between, but probably Harmel Electric.
What’s one thing that you’re going to miss about Trinity?
Definitely the football team. Just the relationships built on the football team, for sure.
What’s one thing you’re definitely not going to miss about Trinity?
Definitely, like, homework. 100% homework is the answer. Direct- quote me on that.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Trinity?
I would say on the weekends sending out the schedule that I make to all my friends on Gmail. It’s always a great read, great weekends.
Is that a schedule for weekend plans?
Yeah, it’s just kind of like, what we’re going to do that day. Very detailed. Send that out like five in the morning on Fridays. Get shit started.
Sophia Whisnant, senior Spanish major
Do you have post-grad plans?
Next January, I will be attending an accelerated nursing school.
Do you have any plans between then and now?
I have prerequisites I need to get done, so I’ll be doing that and working.
What’s one thing that you’re going to miss about Trinity?
Friends. That’s the big one, I think.
What’s one thing you’re definitely not going to miss about Trinity?
I would say school work except I have to do that still, so I’m not sure.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Trinity?
My study abroad. I studied abroad in Mérida, Mexico, in the Yucatan Peninsula, and that was amazing. I had the best time.
Rachel Spain, senior international studies major and Spanish, political science and linguistics triple-minor
Do you have post-grad plans?
I’m still in the process of applying and hearing back from jobs. But right now I’m in the final round of this OECD [Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development] Young Associates Program which I would be based in Paris for two years. So I’m really hoping for that one.
What’s one thing that you’re going to miss about Trinity?
Definitely my friends [are] the major part because everyone will be going off to wherever they’re heading.
What’s one thing you’re definitely not going to miss about Trinity?
Again the schoolwork and — I mean, it doesn’t really apply to me now because I’m a senior and I can drive off campus —, but like, options at Trinity. Starbucks is a lifesaver.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Trinity?
Definitely, again, study abroad. I think it was my favorite semester. I studied abroad in Lisbon, Portugal.
Evan Engelhaupt, senior applied physics major
Do you have post-grad plans?
I’m currently looking for some job opportunities. I just interviewed with Southwest Research Institute. Hopefully, something comes with that.
What’s one thing that you’re going to miss about Trinity?
Probably the people. I’ve got a lot of friends that aren’t graduating. So yeah, probably the people. And one of my good friends [is] staying for a fifth year, so I’ll try to stay in touch with all of them.
What’s one thing you’re definitely not going to miss about Trinity?
I would say I’m ready to take a mini-break from school. I definitely want to go back for higher degrees, but I’m glad to be out of the rigor for a while.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Trinity?
Well, two of my years were eaten up by COVID. I would say … I’m on the mock trial team, and I really enjoy hanging out with those people. I don’’t have a core specific memory, but I would say this last semester I’’ve been hanging out a lot with my close friends. So just collectively that I would say is a good memory.
Austin De Guelle, senior political science major
Do you have post-grad plans?
Yes. Law school.
What’s one thing that you’re going to miss about Trinity?
Yeah, the inclusive atmosphere and the professors are better here. I transferred in, so I would know. The professors here are amazing.
What’s one thing you’re definitely not going to miss about Trinity?
Small campus. Word gets around quick.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Trinity?
I’d have to think about that one.
