Music uniquely intertwines itself with our relationships. Songs can help people remember special moments with their partner, help couples feel closer and even set the mood for intimacy. Undoubtedly, music is an integral part of how people show love and affection for one another.
Many couples have a song that they declare is theirs. These can be songs they heard together during a special moment or songs with lyrics that remind them of their partner. One Trinity student has been with their partner for around nine months, and their song is “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” by Elvin Bishop.
“It’s in the movie ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ and that was one of the first movies that we watched together, and we just really liked it,” the student said. “I think it was like the timing of it and everything, but I don’t know … It was always that song.”
Even people who have not been in relationships feel that music can describe being in love. One Trinity student said they were “obsessed” with the song “I Think I Love You” by The Partridge Family for its romantic lyricism.
“It’s just this stupid, silly old song that’s just so wholesome and sweet,” the student said. “Every time I hear it, I’m just like, ‘This is the cutest thing I’ve ever heard.’ The chorus is, ‘I think I love you, so what am I so afraid of? I’m afraid that I’m not sure of a love there is no cure for.’ Oh, it’s so cute.”
Additionally, music can be helpful for more than just romantic intimacy; it can also be a valuable tool for physical intimacy. One student said it helps ease awkwardness or silence during intimate moments. Another noted that it can bring partners into a more conducive headspace for sex.
“I think a lot of time it just sets the vibe,” one student said. “When you’re not really in that particular mood, listening to the song can do that for you.”
For those looking to create their own sex playlist, Anna Heikes, junior earth and environmental geosciences major, recommended many artists, including Niykee Heaton for her songs “NBK” and “Nexus.” Other students added that The Arctic Monkeys have some songs in their discography worth considering. However, one artist stood above all others. Of all the students interviewed, The Weeknd was the most suggested sex-playlist artist.
“Man, wow, he is so sexy. His songs are just so sultry,” Heikes said. “I mean, I was literally talking to my sister, and she was, like, The Weeknd, immediately.”
On the other hand, some songs were not recommended by students. One student claimed that anything in the pop genre that was too upbeat, like Sabrina Carpenter, should not be on anyone’s sex playlist. Additionally, while students said that lyrics were not especially important, a good beat is the determining factor for what makes a good sex song.
“You’ve got to focus on that beat. Can’t be putting something too slow, too fast — got to keep it right,” one student said. “People are like, ‘I want a bang to Rock Me’ by One Direction. I’m like, ‘Bro, no. The beat there is not right.’”
