I love movies! I love thinking about, watching and reviewing movies more than almost anything else, and one of the most exciting parts about it is the anticipation. From seeing a casting announcement, then the teaser trailer, to finally sitting down in the theater — it is a journey I love to go on. Heading into summer, here are some films I’m excited to see that I hope will give you all that same excited feeling.
“I Love Boosters”
This colorful, absurdist Boots Riley film will follow a group of professional shoplifters, or “Boosters,” who resell the luxury goods they steal for a lower price. Slated to come out May 22, “I Love Boosters” is packed with star power. Riley was also behind the similarly ridiculous 2018 anti-capitalist comedy “Sorry to Bother You.” His new movie includes stars like Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige and Naomi Ackie. The group of Boosters targets Demi Moore’s store, and chaos ensues. I expect “I Love Boosters” will only transcend my expectations.
“Disclosure Day”
Everything I’ve seen about the newest Steven Spielberg sci-fi film has left me with questions that need answering. The trailers have kept the plot vague by purposefully excluding any material from the film’s third act, and this omission only intrigues me more. What I do know is that “Disclosure Day” features a scrappy Josh O’Connor beside meteorologist Emily Blunt, as they work to expose an extraterrestrial truth that could doom humanity. If you too believe something may be out there, be at the theater June 12 to avoid the spoilers Spielberg’s working hard to protect.
“Supergirl”
Last year, James Gunn’s “Superman” swept theaters and reinvigorated the DC cinematic universe. Now, it’s Supergirl’s turn. Starring Milly Alcock from “House of the Dragon” and “Sirens” fame, this version of the Kryptonian is based on the “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic by Tom King. A disenchanted Supergirl teams up with unlikely allies on a journey through the galaxy to save her beloved dog, Krypto. June 26 will see director Craig Gillespie’s eccentric vision come to theaters, and hopefully add to the momentum of the rebranded DC universe.
“The Odyssey”
Last July, Universal began pre-selling tickets to IMAX 70mm screenings of Christopher Nolan’s newest film a year in advance of its upcoming July 17 release. Tickets sold out in minutes, and some are now reselling online for hundreds of dollars. The hype behind Nolan has never been stronger since the unprecedented success of “Oppenheimer” in 2023. His take on the Greek epic stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Zendaya. As the director intends, I plan to see “The Odyssey” in IMAX, and I encourage everyone to see what I’m sure will be a testament to filmmaking.
“I Want Your Sex”
If you want to get a little freaky this summer, make it to the theaters on July 31 for this new Gregg Araki film. The film will follow Olivia Wilde, a provocative artist, as she draws her new assistant, Cooper Hoffman, into a kinky world he’s never experienced. Araki is known for his complicated depictions of sexuality, and I don’t doubt “I Want Your Sex” will provide plenty of conversation when it comes out.
Although these films won’t come out for a few more months, I will revel in the fun of anticipation. When these soon-to-be-masterpieces make their way to the silver screen, take a break from the hot, summer sun and enjoy the cool, relaxing vibes of a new flick.
