Yung Gravy drew in a crowd of 1,002 people to Prassel Lawn for this year’s Welcome Week Concert. The Student Programming Board put the show on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. where students were screaming, jumping and singing along to songs like “Gravy Train” and “Mr. Clean.” Ari Kystya, social media influencer and Gravy’s significant other, even made a surprise appearance halfway through the performance.
During the show, Arlo Castilan, junior neuroscience major, brought a drawing he made of Yung Gravy kissing fellow rapper bbno$, which Yung Gravy took and placed on stage.
“I thought it was so awesome, I almost didn’t believe Yung Gravy was gonna be here,” Castilan said. “I showed everyone [my drawing], and it worked. They drew attention to me, he picked it [the fan art] up and put it on his stand and I’m very, very thankful for that.”
As students sang and recited lines to each song, Yung Gravy himself admitted he was impressed with the spirit, especially after performing at the University of Alabama two days earlier.
“Per capita, y’all have been more lit than Alabama,” Yung Gravy said on stage. “You’re pooping on them!”
As the performance went on, Yung Gravy threw Froot Loops into the crowd during “Betty (Get Money),” gave students a Paws Up and at the end, tossed roses to the audience, saving the last rose for Kystya.
