On Jan. 23, Trinity’s radio station, KRTU FM 91.7, celebrated 50 years on air with a free concert at the Carver Community Cultural Center. The night featured music by Trinity’s Jazz Ensemble alongside a display of the radio’s historical materials curated by Trinity Archives, followed by a performance by Grammy-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn.
Members of the jazz ensemble played a set in the lobby while guests mingled before Horn’s performance. First-year biology major Steven Lawson, who said he’s a long-time listener of the station, played the piano.
“I’m just really excited to play,” Lawson said. “There are a lot of people here. It’s a good chance to play in a combo setting. I’m usually in the big band, so this is a nice change of pace.”
Trinity University archivist Abra Schnur oversaw the memorabilia display, which included photos, flyers, posters and recordings. Shnur said she plans to collaborate with KRTU to host a “history harvest” throughout the 50th anniversary year. People who have worked at or listened to KRTU can donate their materials to the station’s collection in the archives.
“I’m excited to talk to people and just be able to share our mission of the university archives, but in tandem with KRTU celebrations,” Schnur said.
The night ended with a performance by three-time Grammy-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn. Her presence was a special edition of KRTU’s South Texas Jazz project, a series that celebrates the voices of the southern jazz genre.
Much of KRTU’s staff was in attendance to celebrate the 50-year milestone and enjoy a live musical performance for the San Antonio community.
