Golf success for men’s and women’s teams

Men’s and women’s golf had successful tournaments this past Tuesday, April 10; the men’s team finishing second in the West Region Invitational and the Women finishing third in the Southwestern Invitational.

The men’s team tied with Concordia for second place with a score of 927, but through a tie breaker Trinity upheld the second place position.

“Overall the team performed well.  After a struggle in round one we were able to rally back and make a move when needed,” said first year Felipe Benalcazar. “We played solid gold coming in and moved into second place at the end.”

Felipe (80-76-75) was one of three Tiger individuals to tie for ninth place along with Junior Warren Taylor (77-77-77) and First-year Kalen Vos (78-76-77).

“I was not hitting nearly as well as I normally do,” Vos said. “However,  I feel like the time from now to the conference tournament will be enough for me to get my swing back on track and enough time for the team to do the same.”

Between Benalcazar, Vos and Taylor, 231 points were brought in for the Tigers.

“We performed better than last tournament, however, we are still far off from our best,” Vos said.

Sophomore Tyler Lehmann tied for 22nd after following up two rounds of 80 with a score of 77 on Tuesday. Junior Geoffrey Setiawan shot a 238 and finished in the 26th position.  Individual players in the tournament include sophomore Erik Long-Goheen, with a total score of 234, which tied him for 15th place.  Senior Eric Davis (82-76-82) and first-year Eric Redeker (78-84-80) also played individually, ending up in 32nd and 38th with scores of 240 and 242.

“Going into conference at the end of the month, we feel good about our chances, for we have been preparing all year long,” Felipe said. “The team is talented, and it is simply a matter of putting it all together when the time comes.”

The men will compete in the Southern Collegiate Conference Championships at the end of the month in Tunica, Mississippi.

On the women’s side,   Trinity shot 346, defeating St. Mary’s College by four strokes for the third spot.  Sophomore Molly Zumbro tied for fourth individually,  shooting 82-83 over the two days.  Junior Madison Wallender finished in a tie for 10th with a total score of 170 for the tournament.   Senior Julie Orrange and First-year Alessa Hutter both shot 177 overall.

The women’s team will compete again in the Southwestern Collegiate Tournament with the men’s team in Mississippi.
