Baseball gets swept in road series at Hendrix but wins at Hardin-Simmons

Last week the Trinity men’s baseball team had mixed results as they lost a three-game series to Hendrix on March 29 and 30, and then bounced back and defeated Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday, April 1. After these past four games, the Tigers record stands at 22-6 overall and 8-1 in conference.

On March 29, the Tigers played two games against Hendrix, both of which they lost by one run. The first game the Tigers fell 4-3, and in the second game they lost 2-1. The next day, March 30, the Tigers lost 5-4, once again losing by just one run.

“The Hendrix series was frustrating. We didn’t do much right offensively. Our pitching was sound, but our offense left too many runners on base. I think our guys got comfortable winning and started to take it a bit for granted. We’ve been very lucky to win as much as we have, and it’s important to realize that winning is never guaranteed, nor is it easy,” said assistant coach Zach Fregosi.

Sophomore Connor Moore added, “The games versus Hendrix were a constant grind, and we just couldn’t get the job done to get a win. Our strength during the series against Hendrix was definitely our pitching. They allowed minimal runs and competed well each game, but our  weakness that series was our offensive. We struggled to drive runners in in crucial situations of the game.”

However, the Tigers were able to rebound and get a win 13-6 over Hardin-Simmons University on April 1 at home. In the first inning the Tigers scored six runs thanks in part to a three-run home run by Pat Hirschberg. They scored again in the second inning and two runs in the six inning to put the Tigers up 9-0 before Hardin-Simmons got on the scoreboard. Hardin-Simmons then cut the Tigers lead to three runs as they scored six runs in the sixth inning. However, the Tigers shut out Hardin-Simmons for the rest of the game and then scored again in the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth inning to win 13-6.

“We hadn’t been playing the way we usually do, but at Hardin-Simmons we hit well and played good defense. It was a good sign and the beginning of another winning streak,” said sophomore Michael Walker.

The Tigers’ next games are a three game series at Schreiner University this upcoming weekend, April 5-6.

“We have struggled a little bit recently and we haven’t played like the team we know we are capable of playing like.  But we aren’t worried because we know how good of a team we have here and we just gotta keep grinding,” Moore said.
