I bought a dress with embroidery from Cozumel, Mexico and I thought it was so beautiful. Of course the dress was $78 because it was real and handmade. It felt special having something like that. But now, I feel bad for having it. I was planning to wear it to a mexican restaraunt, but I don’t know if I should now because it might be cultural apropriation.

What about someone who is a not white Latino (Brazil) and don’t have those clothes as part of their culture? Like, I’d like to wear a poncho, and there’s even people in Brazil who wear it culturally in South. So I was thinking… Is it inappropriate to use it?

What are your thoughts on an american wearing a ruana? I want to cosplay a hispanic character but I won’t do it if you consider it appropriation. I try to so a lot of research before doing any cosplays of people from a different culture

Hey- thank you for sharing your experience. I wish I could reach through my screen and hug you! I hope the experience of the Trump era makes us continuously vigilant against racism and tyranny, so we don’t see a return to policies like child separation.

I 100 percent agree with this article, and I’m not Mexican, but I think it’s so wrong. It’s so sickening to me to know that I’m the same race as people who wear your traditional clothing, and use where you came from for an aesthetic. You spoke the truth, and that’s beautiful. This is an amazing article. 🙂
