Sidewalk Symposium: Student Fashion

Students share their fashion philosophies outside the Elizabeth Huth Coates Library
Luci Ridlen, sophomore (Kait Nash)

Lucia Ridlen, sophomore philosophy and economics double-major
What’s your overall aesthetic?
“I don’t really consider myself to have an aesthetic. It really depends on what I’m feeling day-to-day. Sometimes I really like a dress, sometimes I really like pants. I don’t like to consider myself to conform to one aesthetic. I’m pretty all over the place.”
Describe your style in three words.
“Random, clean and comfortable.”
Is there a day of the week you dress best for?
“I usually save my best outfit for the day I am around campus the most. Like if I have the most classes or I know I’m going to be on upper campus for most of the day and most people are gonna see me, then I’m probably gonna dress real nice.”
What is one piece of clothing you could not live without?
“Dresses. I hate wearing pants and they’re so easy because then you don’t have to match things together. A dress is an outfit in itself.”

Sumaya Tandon (Kait Nash)

Sumaya Tandon, sophomore geoscience major and chemistry minor
What’s your overall aesthetic?
“Like grunge, but I’m a trend follower, not gonna lie. I feel like I’m all over the place. Sometimes I like to wear a long flowy skirt, but sometimes I like to wear my low-rise jeans with a graphic T-shirt, and I’m always wearing my platform docs.”
Describe your style in three words.
“Y2K, rockstar and baggy.”
How much thought do you put into your outfits everyday?
“I pick my outfits out the night before so maybe it takes like ten minutes. But I pick my accessories in the morning.”
Is there a particular day of the week you dress best for?
“Low-key Monday because Mondays are my busiest days so I’m like, ‘I’m gonna see the most people, so I got to look the most fly on Monday.’”
What is one piece of clothing you could not live without?
“My Docs, like my clunky black Doc Martens.”

Lila Wheat (Kait Nash)

Lilah Wheat, sophomore anthropology and environmental studies double-major
What’s your overall aesthetic?
“I don’t know. I really like long skirts and overshirts, but then I feel like a lot of times I like to dress baggy like cargo pants. I think it varies, just whatever I’m most comfortable in.”
Describe your style in three words.
“I’m gonna use pink as one of my words, possibly cottagecore and maybe thrifted.”
How much thought do you put into your outfits everyday?
“I feel like it depends on the day. Sometimes it takes me 30 minutes to get dressed in the morning, and other times it takes five minutes.”
Is there a particular day of the week you dress best for?
“Probably on my Fridays, because I don’t have class so I can take as long as I want to get ready.”
What is one piece of clothing you couldn’t live without?
“Probably my pink watch.”

Autumn Schmitt (Kait Nash)

Autumn Schmitt, first-year biology major
What’s your overall aesthetic?
“Oh my gosh, I don’t know. It’s so hard to tie things down. I’ve been getting into goblincore, but I was on a dark academia kick. But honestly, however I’m feeling in the day.”
Describe your style in three words.
“Really, really bright.”
How much thought do you put into your outfits everyday?
“I honestly look in the closet for two seconds and I’m like ‘Yeah.’ Not too much thought, I guess.”

Thomas Vollmer (Kait Nash)

Thomas Vollmer, first-year business major
What’s your overall aesthetic?
“I don’t know, I do like thrifting. I sell thrifted clothes so I guess I like a lot of vintage stuff. I’m also a soccer player so I like vintage soccer apparel a lot of the time.”
Describe your style in three words.
“Athletic wear sometimes, vintage and comfortable.”
How much thought do you put into your outfits everyday?
“I try to match sort of, I’m not gonna go out there with crazy colors that don’t match at all. I don’t take a ton of thought, but a good amount. More than I used to. ”
Is there a particular day of the week you dress best for?
“Not really, no. I try to throw on something that looks good every day.”
What is one piece of clothing you could not live without?
“I have this one Liverpool shirt. It’s my favorite team, Liverpool FC. It’s like an old vintage shirt.”
