Austin College visited the Tigers this weekend, only to meet the claws. In an offensive smoke show on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, Trinity scored a combined 23 runs compared to Austin College’s five.

Continuing their winning streak with an onslaught at the plate, the Tigers blasted through game one of the series with ease, winning 9-1 in five innings of the first game of the doubleheader. Trinity’s offense mowed through Austin College’s pitching quickly, leaving a mark for the ‘Roos to overcome for their next game. Samantha Tagawa, Hannah Bordeaux, Sydney Watson and Marina Delaluna were all valuable contributors, cooking up seven Runs Batted In (RBIs) between the four of them. Samantha Tagawa, first-year neuroscience major, mentioned offensive potential in a pregame interview.

“As a team, we’re a good hitting team,” Tagawa said. “We can definitely put runs up on the board. We just have to make sure we stick to our plan and not get too ahead of ourselves. But like I said, we’re a good team. We make things happen.”

The pitching from the Tigers was spectacular in all three games. Only giving up 12 hits throughout the series (with two hits allowed in game one) and allowing just five runs was crucial for Trinity’s success. Notable performances from Jordan Arce and Josephine Koelewyn in the circle led the Tigers to victory. Trinity struck out 11 batters in total, with Arce contributing to five of them.
Game two was a slippery slope in comparison to the last game. Despite Koelewyn’s fantastic outing of throwing seven innings and only allowing one run, the Tigers’ bats weren’t too hot. Austin College pitched well and greatly slowed momentum. However, the claws prevailed and were able to capitalize in tight situations. In a final score of 3-1, the Tigers took their win into the San Antonio night and hoped to carry it over to the next game the following afternoon.
The final game on April 8 was a bloodbath compared to the previous game. First-year Hannah Boudreaux made a major contribution to the offensive fireworks, racking up four RBIs to build the Tigers’ momentum. Samantha Tagawa, Sydney Watson, Jordan Arce and Marina Delaluna were also all valuable contributors, accounting for 10 hits in total. Trinity capitalized on every mistake possible, ensuring that runners in scoring position would advance. Consistent errors from Austin College were a massive help to the Tigers’ success at the plate, with the ‘Roos allowing three errors in this game. Their mistakes gave Trinity opportunities to maximize momentum and score.
Despite tough competition, the Tigers brought out the broomsticks against Austin College for the sweep. This weekend series witnessed utter dominance out of Trinity in nearly every aspect of the field. Pitching, hitting and fielding were exceptional in this series against Austin College, as the ball was soaring left and right in nearly every game. However, a few errors and leaving runners on base can make the Tigers vulnerable in the future. Although an emphasis on the little things would perfect this game, the team showed their true colors and left a powerful footprint this weekend. The Tigers move up to 22-9 (.710) for the season and prepare for their next game against Southwestern (8-20) in the hope of continuing their winning streak of 7 games.
