Trinity women’s tennis hosted the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds on Friday, March 13 and won 6-1. The match against Skidmore was the Tigers’ fourth of a six-game home series, a stretch during which Trinity has gone 4-0 since splitting their two game road trip.
The Tigers started their game against the Thoroughbreds with a sweep in doubles play. Sophomore Allison Vo and first-year Eva Kovachev won a 6-0 set over Skidmore’s Maggie English and Maeve O’Brien-McKevitt, bouncing back after dropping their doubles match against Swarthmore College the day before.
Sophomores Lauren Tin and Katie Schmidt followed suit, defeating the Thoroughbreds’ Mia Rosenberg and Ruth Wilson in a 6-2 set. Tin and Schmidt’s win sealed the deal in doubles to put Trinity up 1-0 over Skidmore heading into singles play. The win gives the duo a 7-1 record and extended their win streak to five.
“[Schmidt and I] know how to work with each other,” Tin said. “I think I’m a little less stressed during doubles because I know I have someone with me at all times, and she’s always there for me whenever I’m kind of getting in tight situations. It’s just nice to have someone there with me to calm me down.”
Heading into singles play, Tin kept the Tigers rolling by shutting out English, winning both sets 6-0 to extend Trinity’s lead to 2-0. Tin’s win marks her first of the season where she blanked her opponent in a singles match. She improved her singles record to 7-1.
“We just remember, we’re doing this for each other,” Tin said. “We obviously love each other a lot, and we want to win for each other, and so, that tends to keep us going for the most part.”
Schmidt and first-year Astrid Kerrman helped extend Trinity’s lead by winning their respective matches. It was Schmidt’s 6-0, 6-1 match win against Skidmore’s Rosenberg that solidified the win for the Tigers, putting them up 4-0.
Making her singles debut of the season, Vo then squared off against O’Brien-McKevitt and decisively won both sets 6-0, 6-1 to extend the Tigers’ lead to 5-0. Junior Rosabella Andrade then succeeded in her match against Skidmore’s Amelie Gonzalez, taking both sets 6-4, 6-2 to hand Trinity their final point of the game, 6-0.
Primarily having played in doubles matches this season, Vo noted the differences in playing doubles and singles. She said that although it’s twice the workload playing in both, the approach in teamwork remains the same.
“It’s a lot of trusting your partner and just learning how to work with each other,” Vo said. “But I think I personally really like [doubles] because it feels like I can completely focus on the really quick one set.”
Skidmore’s sole point against Trinity came in the closing match of the day. Kovachev took the first set against Skidmore’s Ginevra Muratori 6-4. A 10-point tiebreaker in the second set was forced by Muratori, edging by Kovachev 7-6 (6). The Thoroughbreds avoided the sweep with Muratori’s win, while the Tigers closed out the day with the overall win, 6-1.
The win improves the Tigers’ tennis season record to 7-1. Their home series continued on March 17 against Colorado College, and the team won 5-2. They also faced off against No. 22 Wellesley College on March 18.
