Trinity men and women’s tennis secured a weekend sweep against Hardin-Simmons University and Oglethorpe University April 3-4, respectively. The Tigers won all the matches in shutout fashion, 7-0. Inclement weather canceled the men’s April 4 matches against Our Lady of the Lake University along with both team’s matches against Berry College on April 5.
April 3 vs Hardin-Simmons
Women’s tennis opened the home series with a commanding outing against the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls in doubles play.Sophomore duo Katie Schmidt and Lauren Tin led the charge for Trinity, taking their set 6-0 against Hardin-Simmons’ Taylor Levy and Addyson Tylaska, 6-0. The Tigers capped doubles with a sweep, taking a 1-0 lead over the Cowgirls into singles play, which they also swept to cap off a 7-0 victory against Hardin-Simmons.
The men’s game against the Cowboys followed up in similar fashion. Seniors Aashish Dhanani and Conor Kaczmarczyk gave Trinity the early advantage, blanking Hardin-Simmons’ Brandon Curiel and Pedro Rozani. The Tigers went on to win doubles, starting the game with a 1-0 lead over the Cowboys. In singles play, Trinity cleaned house to complete the day’s sweep, winning over Hardin-Simmons 7-0. The day’s closest contest came in the final match, when junior Ethan Flores edged out the Cowboys’ Kayden Lengacher, winning the tiebreaker set 7-6(3), 5-7, 1-0.
April 4 vs Oglethorpe
Men’s tennis took the court the following day against the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels. With the Tigers having a one-set advantage to begin doubles play, Dhanani and Kaczmarczyk took the second set to hand Trinity the first match point of the game, 6-3, leaving Flores and sophomore Roshin Kamath’s set unfinished, 5-3. The momentum carried over into singles play where the Tigers swept to complete back-to-back wins, 7-0.
The consecutive wins improved the men’s tennis season record to 8-7 after they lost four of their last five matches. The wins placed their record a game above .500 for the first time since their win against Occidental College on Feb. 22.
Women’s tennis proceeded against Oglethorpe with a clean sweep in doubles play, winning all three sets 6-0 to give Trinity a 1-0 edge. The Tigers’ momentum carried into singles play where it was a near-shutout all around to cap off the day with a 7-0 win over the Stormy Petrels.
Back-to-back wins extended women’s tennis’ win streak to 11 games, boosting their season record to 13-1. The streak also marks the second consecutive season in which women’s tennis wins at least 10 straight games.
The men and women’s teams will play their final road games of the season against Rhodes College and Millsaps College beginning April 11.
